Hi,

Although I have shown other shots, I just was sent this pic that shows all of the left, er, right side of my Romano Maynard:

And in case anyone is interested in further reading about Maynards here is a down-and-dirty bunch of info .. and easily read too:

My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

A few issues back, 'Man at Arms' magazine ran a pic of a post 1865 body of military cadets armed with a type of ACW carbine and the image was reversed.

Editor Stewart Mowbray was buried in emails and letters by sharp eyed readers wanting to now about the left handed locks on the carbines .....

He thanked them for their observance.

I can't get a good view of the action, but I think I am looking at the right side and perhaps WWE just got his tongue twisted around.  Everything else seems consistent with the image not being reversed,.

Hi,

I should never try to write anything after 10 PM, er, make that 8 PM .... the rifle butt is on my left foot, but the side of the gun showing is the right side ...

Again, my apologies to all ...

And, like the above linked article shows, it IS out of Man At Arms magazine!

Left ... Right ... Forward ... MARCH !

The Drill Sergeant in me is gritting his teeth .....

The command is "Forward, March!", frequently prefaced by the cautionary, "By the left (or right) to indicate the dressing, usually on the Right Marker. Then the cadence, but trained soldiers seldom need it. Recruits generally do.

Properly executed drill is the signature of a professional soldier. It is a reflection of his regimental and soldierly pride, like the 'Old Guard' at Arlington and the sentries at Buckingham Palace.

'Tho not as experienced as you, my good PJ - I was trying to give a little humour, NOT strictly correct drill commands.

Sorry!

Really isn't any reason to start with L, R, and THEN FM, is there!

I've been away from that life for 2 decades now - I've slept since then.

Just joshin' backatcha, Steel Horse.

Just like real Cowboys can spot a Drugstore Cowboy from across the street, I can spot a wanna-be 'play soldier'. The way they stand, handle their firearms, general deportment. Wanna-bees look wooden, stiff and ill at ease, like they were wearing someone else's clothes.
Their mannerisms regarding superiors and subordinates is another give away. Being comfortable with command only comes from experience. It's easier to portray an Officer as opposed to a Sr. NCO. It is expected that Officers will appear to be unable to find their own butts with both hands, twice on the same day .... ;>)
Sr. NCOs run every army in the world and must give the impression of being in control. Without this stabilizing effect, discipline goes to hell in a hand cart.
Best role by far is that of the common soldier. He can be smartly efficient or the typical yard bird and he can fit into any unit but the crack drill team.
A Royal Engineer associate is a practicing lawyer and has a 2nd degree in history. He chooses to portray a Sapper rather than a highly educated Officer of Engineers. Why? No pressure to fit into the mould of a Victorian Officer and Gentleman.

I understood the humour as taken by you, but I wanted to be sure.

As to your other comments, I couldn't agree more.

Sometimes being in command or even recreating it isn't as much fun as the guy who goes out and gets his hands dirty.  Officers have to behave - we NCOs just have to set a good example.  And Privates have no worries!  More or less.
