Need 38-40 barrel selection advise....

I have a Colt Lightning reproduction in 45LC that I want to rebarrel to 38-40. The 45LC has tremendous gas blowback with Black Powder. The 38-40 with its thinner brass will seal the chamber better and I have 8 other rifles and pistols in 38-40 for Cowboy Action Shooting.

But I'm having a heck of a time finding a barrel with .401 Grooves and 1-16 Twist and 24" long.

PacNor lists a .400 barrel and I believe that is the bore, so maybe this is the barrel I'm looking for?

10mm (.400")
6 groove
16"
Polygonal
25"

I've used PacNor on many long range varmint rifles with excellent success.

Any other suggestions on a barrel maker, bore/groove numbers, twist, etc ????

I can't help you with a barrel right off the bat, but had you considered re-lining it?  Track of the Wolf lists 3 sizes in .38-40.  I used one of theirs to reline an 1889 Marlin several years ago and it turned out very well.

Yes, I though about a reline, but the barrel is too thin to be bored out and I'd like to keep the 45LC barrel anyways.

RB; I think a .400 barrel would work out just fine, especially with cast bullets.

Roy,

You, "Sir" are more than welcome!
Contact these barrel makers and see what they have to tell you before you listen to what you may hear on this and/or other like forums.
Again, just a thought on my part,
