Another great old photo of an American Indian with his Spencer sent to me for posting by SSS member Andreas from Germany.

Any idea as to the function of the leather thong in the hole of the stock? I thought it might be a sling, but I don't see anything around the forestock or barrel.
Doesn't seem likely he would have hung it from a saddle pommel with that.

PJ,

Maybe the leather thong was attached to a leather sling that had a leather loop that just fitted down around the barrel to the forestock.  Or maybe it was just a decoration of some kind. Your guess is as good as mine.

Hi,

Sure looks like a home-made rifle sling made for one that didn't have one ... all it would need is a short cord around a shoulder and a way of connecting the two ... like he had seen it on bluecoat cavalrymen  and tried to copy it ...

TTFN,
My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

Notice the missing front sight, a common (non)feature on many of the old Indian firearms I've looked at.
