Victorian Martial arts studio in Chicago.
« on: September 25, 2012, 12:22:22 PM »
This place is in Chicago and along with sword work they are training people in Bartitsu which is a late 19th century martial art studied in England. Now they are planning on building a Victorian Club. This would be the sort of place a gentleman of means would have taken lunch or stopped for a few drinks after work. It looks really cool. I contributed to this cause. Perhaps when they have it finished we can go there in our "cowboy finery" sometime.

That would be awesome! Sadly it is in Chicago which is the most rabidly anti-gun city around for miles!

Ah My Good Sir C -
The last range I knew of in the Loop was in the basement of the "real" Abercombie & Fitch, where they would sight in
rifles for clients going off to safari's. I understand it closed some years ago...

Why yes indeed, it is exquisitely steampunk, victorian and holmesian!

as we see from their videos http://fortezafitness.com/programs/bartitsu/
their Bartitsu  techniques are remarkably similar to Brazilian Jujitsu and AikiJutsu; both of which are well known
as "break-arm" style and both of which include stick/staff techniques as well. Many of the advanced Brazilian Jujitsu
and AikiJutsu seminars are not considered a success unless they have at least one broken bone .

As I enter my 15th Lustrem, I myself am less inclined for all that jumping and flailing about; instead I prefer to use
the time-tested Jedi Mind tricks, Mesmerism, and Strontium 90....

My Dear Sir C -

On my first real job out of school we were  screwing around  horsing around  messing about on the shop floor which was cooled in the summer by large industrial fans mounted about 15' high on steel pillars. We were idley flipping  pennies in the air and I can proudly say that I INVENTED  Penny-Fan Fu .....  got them little coppers buzzzing quite quickly I did ....never did find all of them....

They just posted another video about the inspiration for the clubhouse. I had never heard of the Kernoozers but I absolutely love them.

I can hardly wait to see this place live and in the flesh. It looks like they only need another $500 to pull it off. It is amazing how generous people are when you have a cool idea.
