I'm fixing to order a canvas cartridge belt for my .45-75 and am thinking that with the fat body of the shell I should order loops sized for .50 calibre rounds. Make sense or not?

Muchas gracias.

Hi, Chuck Burrows has a thoughtful reply on The FAQ thread of the Leather Workers Forum .... and just below his post, Marshall Will Wingam has a thread that gives the dimensions for .45 Caliber .... I used these for my Schofields and they worked very well ...

As far as a BROW cartridge belt, I am currently making one ... sewing a loop a night .... I added one of October Country's 'courier belts to have a place to hide my anachronisms  (i.e. ballistic nylon wallet, cell phone, keys). Eventually I am going to make 'indian style sheaths for a Green River butcher knife 10" blade) on the right, and a 'little' exact copy of the Green River but smaller (5" blade on the left)... Here is a pic of the belt so far ... the blurry black thing is my wallet (to give it a little dimension .

And here is a pic of the larger Green River:

My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

I just bought a used canvas cartridge belt for 50 caliber shells. Mine fits the 45-75 perfectly.

Gracias Compadres, fine info there. For some reason I've neglected the leather workers forum, good reminder to have a look. On a ML'er sight I infrequently frequent, Chuck shows some pretty damn nice stuff, he certainly has the knack and has a style all his own.

Now, canvas or leather...?

The standard rifle cartridge belt is the #19A.  The #19B belt is a rifle/pistol combination.  The 4" wide money belt can also be made as a rifle/pistol combination on special order.   Any of these belts can be looped in all of the 1876 Winchester calibers.  Generally speaking, the narrower the belt, the more comfortable it is.  I like making the rifle belts no wider than the total length of the loaded rifle cartridge that is being carried.  The .45-75WCF cartridge belt I made for myself is only 2 1/2" wide and it works flawlessly.  Most people don't realize that web belts of that period were made only for .45-70 and .50-70 Gov't cartridges.  Civilians such as buffalo hunters used leather belts, usually made up in saddle shops on the frontier.

For what it is worth,. I made my own belt out of canvas that I glued two sides together and then a little at a time, stitched the loops in that also were of canvas that was glued together. I used my handy-dandy leather stitching awl to do the job. That caliber is for my 40-82 and I see no reason that, if you have time to kill, that could not also be done for the 45-75 which I am thinking of doing myself.  Just thought that I would pass this on and besides it would have special "Bragging Rights" when you would show it off when you could say that you made it your ownself!  The buckle and the other end are of leather that I rivited on.
