Competitive? Oh yeah? Serious about practice? Oh yeah. Do I want to win? Hell yeah! From 2001 to 2007, it was dryfiring for about 30 minutes every evening. I wear my holster rig around the house some almost every day. I randomly and slowly place my hand on the grip as if to draw. Muscle memory. About half the time I will complete the draw, cock and dryfire, and reholster without looking. Sometime I stand and slowly draw the strong side, cock nd dryfire, reholster s I am pulling the weak side gun , transfer, cock and dryfire, and reholster.
A couple days of the week I will set up a table outside and practice transitions that fit the stage. No lost motion. Your hands should never be idle.
I keep a bunch of wild colored dummy 12 gauge rounds round. Strap on the cartridge belt and pull two. I do not do well with four even with my big hands/fingers.
Practice, great equipment, desire, and having more fun than anybody. Camille and Stump Water can attest to our years of fun.

Light loads? What about them? I shoot a 38 cal 105gr lead truncated cone at 795fps out of a pair of Cody Conagher once owned and tricked out Ruger three screws. I shoot CodyMatics and '97s once done by Lone Dude. Now me. All you need to do is ring steel. Within the ruless.

Leather by Mernickle and lately by Rod Kibler out of Alto, GA.

Is it Saturday yet?

All I care about right now is reaching certain plateaus.....

#1) No "P"s
#2) Shoot Clean
#3) Get under 40 sec
#4) Get under 35 sec
#5) Get under 30 sec

I've only been shooing since last summer. Have 14 shoots under my belt and I'm just starting to see #4. But a few Ps jump in there every now and then and a miss or two is unfortunately here and there........... :'(

I shoot against myself.........Winning a match is not in the cards right now. I want to shoot 45LC, Old guns, and different guns.....That is the FUN of the sport for me. I'm 6 month away from 60yo so I'm shooting against younger 49ers. Next year I'll be a young "Senior"................Look Out!   ;D

Howdy folks!  Been away a long time; gotta whole buncha catchin' up to do...

First, do I compete?  Heck yeah, but only with that feller I shave in the mirror every morning!  Of course there's always a little friendly competition between me and a couple of my pards, but once the guns are put away it don't mean a thing.  When the match results are announced, we always cheer and clap whenever any of us does well...

Second, I make a clear distinction between "Winners" and "Gamers".  Of course y'all gotta understand that, where I shoot, I regularly see folks like Lefty Longridge,  Badlands Bud and Lead Dispencer in action.  When they're not making those steel targets ring like an alarm clock, they're busy helpin' out any way they can.  They're friendly and helpful to all and sundry: Badlands Bud helped me solve a particularly "sticky" problem with my '66 Winchester, Lead Dispencer helped me to get faster with my pistolas, and Lefty Longridge has provided tremendous help in both speed and accuracy with pistols, rifle and shotgun.  None of them are ever at a loss for a friendly joke or something nice to say.

These, and others like 'em, are the ones I call "Winners."  I'd gladly ride the river with any of 'em every danged day of the week, and twice on Sunday.  If you want a picture of those I call "Gamers", start with anyone who is very competitive, then take all the good traits of "Winners" and give them the exact opposite.

Third, I shoot (SASS and W3G) with an eye toward reasonable historical accuracy.  Daniel Nighteyes, as I understand him, drifted generally westward from the Nations following the Civil War. He spent some time among the Comanche, Kiowa and Jicarilla Apache. The time period is the early- to mid-1870's, so my shooters and gear (excepting the gun cart, of course) reflect both the person and the time-frame.  The ONLY modification I've made to my shooters, besides workin' 'em a lot, is lightened main springs on my two pistols -- a brace of Remington New Model Army revolvers with conversion cylinders.

Regards and best wishes to all,

-- Nighteyes

My wife and I recently attended a 20th anniversary shoot - the 'Palmer's Gulch' event at Hefley Creek, BC. Not a big shoot by US standards (125 shootists), but a damn fine match.
We were all given a DVD of the first match and it brought back memories. Many of the folks in that DVD have since crossed the Great Divide; others aren't going to be around much longer.
When we posed for a pic of the survivors, we had a moment of reflection for 'absent friends'.

It used to bug me no end when the gamers took over with wimp loads, but it's a personal choice. Our club has opted not to go that route, the .44s and .45s still rule. We even have an annual cap & ball match requiring BP in long guns as well; 100% 'Frontiersman'.

At the 20th anniversary I mentioned above, 5 from our club elected to shoot 'Frontiersman' class. We decided to have a competition amongst ourselves. Unfortunately, two were no-shows, but we placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the category. Now others are gunning for us ....

Win lose or draw- you get out of it what you put into it and I've never met a Cowboy shooter I couldn't tolerate. Just some better than others .... ;>)

Actually, I know several CAS shooters that you might call "Gamers" who shoot .45 Colt, .45 Schofield, .44-40 and so forth.  Me, I just call 'em Winners, 'cause they are.

Couldn't have said it better myself...  ;D

I've been a gamer all my life, but, in a game like this, there is more than one way to win.  It's about shootin', but it's also about role play.  I see the competition is only against one person: the man in the mirror.  I play my way, you play your way, he plays his way, and she plays her way... and we all have fun!

I wonder what they called "nerds" back in the 1880's.

Someone recently asked me, "what is the best western?"  I replied, "It's a pretty good motel, but I like Motel 6; they'll keep a light on for you."
