RIP my dear friend

Forty Rod

Today at about noon I lost one of the best friends I ever had.  Peanut was a mixed breed Podengo-mutt who was almost exactly 16years old and had lived with us since he was three months old.

He had gotten old and feeble, couldn't walk well or hear, was losing his sight and control of his functions, and was in pain most of the time.  He had stopped eating and hadn't slept in several days more than a few minutes at a time, yet every morning he struggled to go outside with me and was willing to try to play. Every night at bedtime he was at his post at the corner of the hall where he could monitor all four bedrooms, the three doors into the house, and the living room and dining room.

He never gave up and it was my decision, not his, to stop the pain.  He would have gone on until the pain or failure of his body forced him to stop or killed him.  I couldn't ask that of him.

He died at home in familiar surroundings with my wife and me close beside him, not in some tiny, strange, sterile little room in a place that he hated and feared.

I will miss him more than anyone can know who hasn't lost someone close, someone who loved them without reservation and trusted them without question.

He's crossed that rainbow bridge now and is able to be a pup again and to enjoy all that that means.  He's in good company.

RIP, my very good little friend.

God bless Forty Rod. You have a lot of strength to be able to make that decision for your friend. You gave him the dignity he deserved.  One hundred percent class and courage in my book.

Howdy Forty Rod,

The Major expressed my sentiments exactly. I've never had a friend like Peanut but your post brought a tear to my eye.

God bless.
You need to learn to like all the little everday things like a sip of good whiskey, a soft bed, a glass of buttermilk,  and a feisty old gentleman like myself

Forty, I feel your pain over losing a pet that you have loved for 16 years. I have experienced that loss a few years ago. I lost both of my "Boys" at age 16. I was able to find a wonderful replacement at our animal shelter to fill that great loss in my heart.  She has been my constant companion since that time. Peanut is in a better place and free of pain.

Having a good dog makes us better men, my Chesapeake bay retriever was 12 when 2 years ago he was hit by a car. It broke his back behind his shoulders. It was the hardest decision I ever had to make to have the vet end his pain. He now lays in my back yard and is always missed. While I write this I look to my Springer spaniel, 8 years old, and starting to gray around his eyes. When his time comes, I will have the memories of 2 of the best dogs a man could ask for. Memories of ducks in flooded timber, and a pheasant and grouse hunting finatic. He will be laid to rest next to his brother. Im very sorry for your loss, Sir. Perhaps there is a pup out there waiting to fill the void.

And it never gets easier.

I was holding it together pretty well until I started to make breakfast and got out two sausages for me and one for Peanut.   Been doing it so long it's become automatic.

I have to stay busy or I'll get to feeling bad and come unglued.

Thanks, all of you.

Sittin' here thinkin about it, I thought I would explain my posting the picture of Peanut. I didn't ask 4T for permission to do it, mostly because I was afraid he would tell me no to do.....so I did it anyways, and here is why:

A while back 4T asked at the Grumpy Lunch Bunch if anyone knew someone reliable I mean RELIABLE to "dog sit" Peanut. now this wasn't just feeding and watering, but one had to give some medication and some attention to him. He was willing to pay up to $20 per day and he was gonna be gone for a couple of days.... Well after the lunch I stepped up and said I would be happy to do it.

Well sir, I called GramaPhyllis to tell her about it and the first words outta her mouth was you are NOT going to charge him anything, well I already knew that but said yes mam....

We got there the first day, and there by the medication was a full page of instructions (typed single space) on how to feed him and give him his meds (Phyl said that 4T treats Pnut like I do Gracie....yup...)

anyways we fed and medicated Peanut and sat and played with him..and we both fell in love with him too...

last time I went to 4T's house me and Peanut were sitting on the living room floor visiting (to hell with 4trod...) and 4T brought Peanut his pad..to be more comfortable..

and so that picture is about my last memory of Peanut, and I took the liberty of saying goodbye in my way......with a picture..

sorry 4T, you just have to give me this one...

I have a cat, she can be the most ornery, contrary female of any species, but I love the old girl. She's going on nine years old now, still full of herself but, she's started slowing down some. I know she'll be heading our one day but I dread it. We've been through a lot together, helped each other through some bad times. Pets become more than pets, they become family, in some cases closer than family. I feel for your loss, 4T.

I used to always be a "dog" person, but when I met GramaPhyllis she had an ornery calico cat. that cat would wait for me at the door or the side of the drive way at night to come home, and I would go to sleep at night with her at my side, when she had to pass she was old and I didn't think I wanted another........but

my wife and her sister conspired agasinst me and brought "Gracie" in to my life. she was the runt of the litter, and was named Gracie after Gracie of Burns and ..... cuz she was the comic relief...

sometimes when I am feeling poorly she will stand on my chest and look me in the face and turn around and walk down my length and stretch out between my legs and go to sleep. I feel much better having had my "cat scan"....

I will miss her when the time comes, and I am a reformed dog/cat person

Cats, Dog, Horse

I have Jake he is my boy, one is or has never been so glad to see me when I come home from work in the afternoon.
Heck., I get excited greetings if I just went to store for a few hours. If travel on Business he is beside himelf, gone a few days he eats me up on my return.
Raised him from a 5 week old pup , he's 7 this year and is a Boarder Collie.

Then there's Bo, short for RAMBO , Cream & white Himalayan , he is 19 years, when the wife brought him home he'd fit in the palm of one hand. He sleeps alot , eats & drinks well .... but

And China ( China Red ) she was not my only horse, but she was my 1st.  We reenacted 25 years together, several Films together.
Arthritis, and 30 years grounded her, in the end she knew she could not get up again, Lord we tried to help her up.
The vet came out, she knew him, he knew her, he put her down easy where she was laying.
She excepted it like the trooper she was , the vet cryed ( never charge me a dime ) , I was a wreak.
That was 15 years ago ....I'm a wreak again now, just writing this.....
