Mixed among my cans of 3f I found a can of 4f.  Can't return it, don't have a flintlock.  I like to shoot .45 ACPs with one cc of 3f in an extra cylinder for one of my Cimmerrons.  Could I use it for that?  Thought I might try it in my Russian Nagant as well.  Or a .36 C&B.

Not looking for power, just want to use it up.

I loaded some .38 specials with small amount I had.  It was quite pleasant ;D

No problem. In fact it is what I would recommend if someone were to try BP in their 45ACP. The pressures that a smokeless proofed gun can take are way above what you are gonna get from a granulation change. On of my older BP manuals (I think Lyman 1st Ed but not sure) showed loads for 3F & 4F in various C&Bs including the ROA. There wasn't a whole lot of difference in pressure or velocity. The 4F had higher pressure differences in the 36 cal than the 44s. A full chamber of FFFFg generated about 125FPS over a full chamber of FFFg in the 44s. There was about a 20% increase in pressure. In a smokeless proofed gun that is no big deal compared to a smokeless proof load.

Since I have 14+ guns, I've been called the Imelda Marcos of Cap&Ball. Now, that's a COMPLIMENT!

Try some 2f or 3f In that Nagant before ya try the 4f. The 2f and 3f both are noticably more boom than regular Nagant loads. WM

The ROA is specifically rated for 4F. I am not sure anything else is.

Maybe find a ROA shooter and do some trading?

4F is a great thing to have handy around the 4th of July ;-)

Like you, I 'inherited' a couple of cans of 4f.  I've used it in cartridges and it works fine.  It does foul the gun more than 2 or 3f, but it works.

So, use the 4f for practice matches only.  In a significant match it may result in fouling out a gun.  Not worth it for that.
