Thought I'd share this with folks who'd appreciate it:

S&W 4th model 38 DA.  6" barrel with red mottled grips.

I collect pre-1900 38 DA S&W's and this little gem filled a nice spot in my collection.

It will be shot, but not in a match.  Match shooting is hard on guns and this is in such nice original shape, I want to keep that way.

I do have a friend that occasionally shoots NCOWS matches with 5" S&W 38 DA's.  It is fun till he gets a knock down target.

They are fun to shoot.  The 2nd model DA S & Ws are the strongest.  I have a 5" that I use in the NCOWS DA Championship.
The red motled grips are pretty cool.  I have a 3" 1 1/2 cf with reds and a 3 1/4" SA .38 with them.

None are as nice as Pancho's DA 4th though.

Howdy

I'm jealous. The combination of the red mottled grips and the long barrel make this one fairly unusual. Take good care of it.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Pancho thats a Beauty!  lOVE those mottled grips...have ya shot it yet? Mine is a 2nd model 3 1/2 " barrl original blue.
Gotta love those vintage S&W's !

I got a hold of an 1898 S&W 4th model, but in .32 S&W ... it had the original grips (which I understand are quite collectible if in good condition) ...

Anyway, I had Big T make some stag grips for it so that I could store the originals ...

And here is the original grips and holster:

And here is a pic of the S&W Pocket Pistol in the holster I made for it (that matches it's Schofield Holsters [also made bu me])

Correct.  The black gutta percha usually take a dark brown chocolate color with age.  The "more" desireable" originals are pearls (very rarely found with S&W medallions), and the red mottled hard rubber.  I've seen the red grips sell for over $200 alone.

Another "rare" S&W DA grip are the checkered walnut grips with medallions.  These can be rarely found on the large frame 44 DA.  I've got one pair from a 44 DA Frontier (with matching serial numbers).  They are mentioned in Jink's book, but my pair are the only original wood pair I've seen.

Need to shoot some pictures.

Pancho,

I had to look at my grips .(they are in a plastic case in a storage drawer) .. sure enough, they are chocolate Brown ...almost the color of dark chocolate ...

Them are all nice S&Ws.  W.W. Ellis, are those "stag grips" elk horn?  They look more like elk horn than sambar stag.   :)

Danny,

Probably Elk Horn .... I asked T-Bar match my Schofield Grips, and I never asked what they were ...
