Well its been an interesting couple weeks for me.  However I will refrain from all the personal issues as my life does not make very exciting reading.  However I will relate the latest from F Troop Company.

1.  Found a sutler folding up shop and snagged most of his left over insignia from Civil War and Indian Wars!  All new.  Mostly Branch of service insignia, but also a few others.

2.  Car broke!  So I am forced to run a ".38 Special" on my two .38 Colt Double actions.  One Is a M1894 with a weak finish but seems to function great.  $650.  The other is a M1901 that was reworked in 1918.  Its has an issue locking the cylinder in place sometimes. My gunsmith and I think this may be for two reasons, a week cylinder latch spring and the ejector that also serves as the locking notches is VERY worn and probably needs replaced.  Otherwise a great pistol.  I am not willing to put anymore money into it right now so $350.  Prices good from 15 July-21 July, 2012

The differences are internal and subtle.  It takes an expert to tell them apart except for serial number range.

Books is correct.  The differences are usually internal and very subtle.  The first type is the Navy M1889, in 1892 that Army adopted it with wood grips instead of hard rubber.  You may see an extra pin or screw here and there but the only REAL difference in that in 1901 they started adding lanyard rings.  Many M1892's, M1894, M1896's had lanyard rings added later and many of these arms were sent back in 1918 and completely reworked as much as possible (like my M1901 for sale).  The date of my M1896's serial number range (1901) makes me suspect it had the lanyard ring added before it left factory.

I have pattern 1872 cavalry sabers and artillery cannons right now for IWP.  Sorry, no engineer, but will keep an eye open.

Just to be clear on the caliber, both of my 1896 colt army revolvers are .38 long colt not .38 special.  One 1896 was made in 1898 then in 1901 was modified with the lanyard ring and relabeled as a 1901, the other 1896 was made in 1900 and is still marked 1896 and has no lanyard ring.

Those are great prices.
