Has anyone tried it?  I am sitting here thinking about switching from Clays to Trail Boss for my .45 and using it in some cartridges I have yet to load for when the question came to mind.  I have two nice damascus Parkers (10 & 12) and a 1901 Winchster 10 that I would like to load for and it sounds like Trail Boss might work just fine.

Well I think I have an answer to my question.  I just got off the phone with Dave at IMR and he said they had tried Trail Boss in a shotgun and found they could not get enough powder in the case to do the job.  I had been a little concerned about that but didn't know just how bulky TB was relative to black powder.

Trailboss is a large powder I need to use the rifle powder drop in my hornady Lock&Load AP Press.I do like it for the 45lc as for shot gun I have no clue.

But there is data for TB in 30-06.

look into Winchesters AAlite powder.   it's what they use in their feather-lite (low noise/low recoil ) shells.
Don't know about it in Damascus  guns though,  you might be better off with black or a black sub.

I'm prtty much aware of all the alternative powders for use in damascus but it looked like Trail Boss might be perfect for the application and it would have been if it had been a little more dense or a little bit more powerfull.  Oh well it was worth looking into.

Your definitely not the first with the idea.  A pard and I were thinking of the something a few years ago when the feather-lite shells were going up in price.  A call to winchester/IMR/Hodgdon set us straight but thats when we found out that they were going to release the win AAlite to reloaders.  tada!,the perfect powder for "light" shotgun loads.
Still don't know about in Damascus.
you may know this already,  black powder builds it's peak pressure at the chamber where the barrel is the thickest but all smokeless powders build to peak pressure  about the end of the forearm.  the steel is thinner hear especially on Damascus barrels.  I have seen several really nice Damascus guns with the barrel blown out just at the end of the forearm.
I know there are others that have more knowledge than me on this.  Just passing on what Ive learned.

It's good to know something, but it's always better to know why.

And now I do. Thanks for passing this along.

@ Popa Kapoff - Regarding TB in 30-06, there's was a great article on surplusrifle.com that I had linked that discussed just that. However, their website seems to be down.  :-\

Basically they state that TB is an excellent powder for reduced loads in old military cartridges. They had several example loads, including .30-06. I don't want to repeat data from memory, but they had a simple rule of thumb for starting loads they got from IMR's info on TB. I'm sure if you did some digging, you'll find what you're looking for.

Ignore the above, I misread "There is data" as "there is NO data". My bad.

If you are looking for loads with as little pressure as possible for 12 Guague, look at some of the data for IMR 7625.  Not a well known powder, but for this it is the best.

hawkeye all the suggested above are good. If your looking to "KISS", loads pistol rifle shotgun. Clays is the ideal  powder. It will work where the Trailboss lacks
