We've often discussed good Spencer movies & books - I'm curious what's the worst Spencer movie or book you've see/read?

For me the worst book would actually be 3 books - the Stars and Stripes Trilogy By Harry Harrison.  In this trilogy the Spencer holds 12 to 20 rounds depending on the book and where in the book its mentioned.  Plus they invade England with tanks & the descriptions of the US ships sound like they're really Oregon class pre-dreadnoughts.

The worst movie would be Last Stand at Saber River - actually I enjoyed the movie but had to laugh at the line "With you eye sight daughter this will be good to 800yrds" when handing his daughter a Spencer carbine.

Thoughts?

I don't remember the title or much about the book, but it talked of the Spencer's 30-30 having amazing knock down power.
The Blue and The Gray get my vote for lousy movie (mini- series).

I have read the stars and stripes trilogy and I have watched the Blue and The Gray "have it on DVD" I liked both. Remember Stars and Stripes is a fantasy. So you can have a 20 shot Spencer and steam powered Tanks with turret mounted Gatling Guns. Well the Blue and the Gray was I think CBS TV's answer to ABC The North /South Mini series. Which was a far better Mini Series. The Blue and The Gray was filmed in Arkansas in the fall and winter, No leaves on the trees. So the 1st battle of Bull Run had bare tree's. But since the actual battle took place in July. Trees should have been full of leaves. It had some quirks. Was not as bad as Abraham Lincoln verses the Zombies Now that is a bad movie. Mix of 1873 Colts, Brown Bess Muskets and ole Abe carrying a switch blade sickle. :o :o :o
Now a member of the Spencer Shooting Society #430
Shooter of 1-Trapdoor Springfield 1- Maynard Carbine- 1- Brunswick Rifle- 1-.50cal Hawkin- 2 -1858 Remingtons- 1- 1851 Colt Sheriff-1- 2nd model Dragoon- 1 .75cal Brown Bess Carbine-and now 1- Armi Sport 56/50 Spencer
Maybe I like Black-powder guns too Much

With due respect to Pvt Gregg ... For a moment I'l like to take the subject a bit off topic.

In responce to Matt45 & Sharps1863

The Blue & the Gray was indeed filmed in part in Arkansas , the Bull Run location was Prairie Grove....
However, we Filmed TB&TG in 1982,  3 years before we filmed North & South Part 1 & Part 2 ( Miss. SC. Ark. La. & Calif )
as an aside N&S - Book 3 "Heaven and Hell" was filmed 9 years later in Floorsville Tx.

I say "WE" because I worked on all 4 productions.....

Matt ...the 2 Spencers used by Gregory Peck as Lincoln were my own carbines, both converted to CF with S&S upper Breach Blocks.
The one carried by Stacy Keach was a rental.  ( BTW these same Spencers were seen in an Episode of "Miami Vice" & were on all the North South locations, " Glory"  & "Gettysburg" )

There was a very good cast of well known Actors and a fine western Director Andrew V. McLaglen ( the Great Victor McLaglen's son )

However, a Fine cast ( excluding Keach & Oates  ::) ) was not enough.... in particular the Warren Oates part stunk to high heaven !
Keach was so wooden he was.... yeah ! he sucked too.
Despite much effort, way to many Anachronisms are seen....  :o

You know, I still have an occasional dream were we are Filming a Period piece and cars are parked in camera POV, and everybody is
oblivous to it !

It's not the worst Mini Series   :-\  it may indeed be the worst with Spencers  ;)

when planets align...do the deal !

Worst movie with a Spencer was 3:10 to Yuma.  Guy carried it around through the entire fick and never once shot it.  I guess maybe they had a deal with a gun rental company or something.

Also I just never liked 3:10 to Yuma, the old OR the new one.

Re: the Blue and the Gray- it was good in many respects- they sure did a good job w/ Peck looking like Lincoln, the Spencer scene was ok, but why the Keach character etc, etc.  Oh well.
I've grown a little fonder of 3:10 to Yuma over time- kind of gives me the yen to get a Schofield.  I wish they could have implanted Bale's character w/ a set of expletive deleted.  I would like to give a tip of the hat to whoever was the firearms guy for that movie- something besides Colts and Winchesters
