Colt Lightning Rifle Smith

Hey all,

A friend has a 38 WCF Lightning Rifle with 26" barrel. I haven't seen the rifle in-person, but sounds like the bore appears to be good.....but the chamber may be rough, possibly pitted. May be useable as-is, or may need the chamber and/or bore relined.
(Hopefully I'll get it in my hands this summer to check the bore/chamber with a borescope, slug the bore and test fire)

Formerly, I had a terrific smith (Vaughn Trueman) who is great with these rifles (& DA Colt & SW period revolvers, too) ...he relined a similar 38WCF a couple years ago...along with several .22s and my 1873 Winchester. Unfortunately, he's going into semi-retirement and only taking-on standard CAS action-jobs, etc.

So, looking for a gunsmith who is knowledgeable about the subject rifle and has the know-how & tools to reline chambers/bores.... if further research of this gun indicates. Any recommendations?

I reckon so...but, when contacted last year, the indication was they did not work on Colt pump rifles.

Maybe I should ask if they'd simply reline a barrel, provided it was removed from the gun and sent in alone. Complete teardown & reassembly of the Lightning is no problem on this end. Current headspace is very good. If it was too tight for any reason after lining, it is simple to remedy.
