I have an Uberti 1860 Army (brand new) and its going to be a "thank you for everything" gift for my dad. I am having Rowdy Yates do the work on the revolver for me and am trying to figure out what exactly I should do to the revolver for my dad. Now, my dad is a more traditional guy and shoots cap&ball every so often when he has time. The most he has ever done to his revolver is change out the nipples...now I want him to have a kick ass pistol.

I know I will be having a trigger job done and Rowdy also recommended a coil spring in the hand and also install cap guards.

But what does it mean on his website about slot cylinders for cappers and machine leade in approaches for bolt?...are these things neccessary?

And finally, should i have the hammer slotted for .125" and a front blade installed?...would you guys want that on gift or would you want it original and change it later down the road if he wants?

I hope you guys can help me...this revolver is just sitting in my safe and I want to get this surprise going for my dad.

I'd leave it alone, and let him make any changes that 'he' might want.

These are for Remingtons.

Leave it looking stock.  More people are into the traditional look than competition mods.

A couple of other thoughts.  Have you pulled the trigger on the new Uberti?  Most of the new ones have very light trigger pulls out of the box.  In fact, some are so light I have had to deepen the sear cut in the hammer to raise the trigger pull into the two pound range.  You might also consider just welding the notch in the hammer nose up and installing Treso nipples.  This will eliminate most cap jams and the need for cap guards.

Instead of messing with the gun, why not get him a nice case for it perhaps with some accessories?  Bills Cases does an excellent job.  This would make quite a fine gift for your dad.  Bill actually has a case on his website so you can see a picture of what he would make for your dad.  The cases are not cheap, but well worth the money IMO.

EMF has cases, as well as does Dixie Gun Works and several others.

Why not get him a nice holster to go with the gun? It can be fancied up quite a bit and be way cheaper than doing mods to a gun that he might not want or need. Guns are for shooting, holsters are for using AND looking good.

I'd get a few accessories and stop there.  I would not have any mods done because they're usually kind of personnal.  Your Dad may like the gun as is.  I've had guns modified to suit me and some others who have fired the guns hate the mods.  To each his own.  Leave them stock.  Hey, there is always next year!  Good Luck!
