Ho Pards info needed here!!

I`m thinkin of gettin meownself a Chiappa Mini sharps in 45LC..
It has double set triggers so`s you can ( from what I have gleaned) set it so its a hair trigger by using the first trigger to set the second.

Here is what I want to know... iffn Ole PUK don't wanna use a set trigger can he adjust it so`s its a normal single pull of a sensible break weight

Most set triggers are adjustable. Contact the Mfg to be sure.

Dear PUK,

A couple of things. With double set triggers like those on the Chiappa & Lyman mini Sharps, the rear trigger "sets" the front trigger to a lighter ("hair") trigger. Then the front trigger is used to fire the rifle. The way the set works is that an arm on the rear trigger is under spring tension when it clicks into the set position. Then the front trigger releases the set trigger and that arm flips up and trips the sear in the lock. Unset, the front trigger can be pulled to push the sear in the lock.

On double set triggers like those on the Sharps, the small screw between the triggers adjusts the amount of engagement between the rear and front trigger when the rear trigger is "set". One can also adjust the set spring tension to change the tension. I can't remember if there is an even smaller screw behind the rear trigger to adjust the tension, but that is usually the case. Too light of an adjustment on the tension and it won't have enough power to knock the sear out of the notch.

Now for the bad news. Often the trigger pull on newly made guns with set triggers is quite heavy. Worse, to adjust the unset trigger pull usually requires the same kind of gunsmithing that most sidelocks need - fussing with main and sear springs and sear engagement surfaces and amount of sear engagement. One other thing, built into the sear of most double set guns is a little swiveling lever called a "fly". It keeps the sear from dropping back into the halfcock notch when the trigger is used from the set position. So, if you decide to dismantle the lock to smooth things up watch out that you don't lose the fly.

The above being said, I wouldn't let your concern prevent you from acquiring the rifle. In addition, you may find that the set trigger can be a real blessing for fine work.

So you'll know, I worked for CVA years ago on the development of their Mountain Rifle. I got a graduate level course in set triggers back then. Once you understand how the system works, you can adjust to your heart's content.

That's all I understand about what I know about these things,

Reverend Chase

Thanks fer the input pards

So what I can take from this is.

I CAN set the trigger on a Chiappa mini sharps  to behave like a NORMAL bog standard trigger for `Sharp shootin`

Howdy PUK,

There's no need to "set" the trigger to work like a regular trigger. Don't bother with the rear trigger just use the front trigger. I is also a regular trigger. It's just that you may or may not want to massage things in the lock to get the trigger pull you desire. I think that you'll find that you'll use the set trigger when time allows. I love them, but I'm glacial when it comes to shooting on the clock.

Howdy PUK,

Glad I could help. Remember the unset trigger may not be target grade, although it may be fine for a second quick shot. As I indicated a little knowledgeable gunsmithing on the lock will probably help.

Ho Reverend...

Here`the full SP..

Me `n a pard thought up a `mini Plainsman` match about 9-10 yrs ago, and the last senerio of the discipline is two wolfes appear and you have to get 2 snap shots off in 12 secs.  then ready yourself for the next exposure, repeated 5 times. from a distance of 25 yds.

So as you can imagine with rollers and martini actions 12 secs. aint much!!

I have attached a piccie from the 25yds marker there are 10 wolfes 2 for each shooter

Howdy PUK,

Sounds like a fun and challenging stage. Frankly, I'm not sure that a Sharps offers any greater speed than a Roller or Martini (I've never fired either). A trapdoor with its ejector might be the ticket, although the examples I'm familiar have pretty stout triggers.

Please don't take any of the above as a reason not to pick up the Sharps. The small versions are very cool. Check the bore dimensions carefully. Some versions, like the H&R 38/55, have a larger than than SAMMI spec bore. .380 vs .378. With the right bullets either will shoot well.

Good Luck,

Reverend Chase
