I was setting up to shoot at the long range lever action rifle side match at our state match the other day when "single load a round directly into the chamber" vs "load thru the magazine" discussion came up.

A lot of good points were made for both schools of thought.  It was settled by the RO, when he said "SASS rules" require loading thru the magazine.  The RO is the RO, and that's the way we shot the match.  After I got home, curiosity got the best of me, so, I started looking for the "SASS rules" and can't find any reference to a requirement for only "loading long range lever guns thru the magazine".

Can someone help me out here with reference for this rule?

Thanks

There is no such rule unless it is specifically stated in the stage instructions and that would be poor stage writing IMO

Any timed match I have attended allows the lever guns to be loaded for the required number of rounds. Of course, the single shots are loaded accordingly.

I don't understand the reasoning of loading one at a time in a lever gun.

While it true that some long range matches are timed, time is usually only used when there is a tie on the number of hits.  Quickest time wins.  However, this was not a timed event.  So there was no advantage to either single load or magazine loading.  If there was a tie, there would be a shoot off to determine the winner.

Boo on my sloppy reading, I missed the long range lever action part but my response remains the same, there is no such rule. ;)

He may be mixing his rule books.  NRA Cowboy Rifle Caliber Silhouette stipulates that the rounds must be loaded from the magazine tube.  This is partially to keep the Silhouette shooters from using pointed bullets (higher bc).

This is why I keep a copy of each game's rules on my phone and tablet when I am at a match.  When working under different but similar rule sets, it is easy to mix them up and I will try and refresh before the match.  By the way, I am not a D*** Range Lawyer, I just want to be sure of the rules that I am to be playing under for each game.   I have been burnt a couple of times >:( which puts a real damper on the match.

Also, any good MD should have a CURRENT copy of the rules available for clarification.

I can think of two good reasons to differentiate between loading through the magazine and loading singly: keeps spitzers from being used and keeps folks from loading into the leade.

Got it in one! ;D  The NRA Rules were to keep it "fair" and safe.  They wanted any Joe with a 30-30, etc. to be able to come out and play on the "same" field.  In fact they even issued a ruling not allowing the Hornady Leverlution bullets because they were such a game changer with the old lever guns.
