Hello the camp-
For your perusal, here are the ballistics for a trailboss load:
Temp- 28 F
Humidity- 34%
Elevation- 5820
Load:
5.5 grs. Trailboss, Fed Large Pistol magnum, starline case, 200 gr RNFP cast bullet (15 shot string @ 50 yds)
AVG vel.- 921 fps
Hi- 941
Low- 883  (this was an aberration, I think, since all others were within 20 fps)
SD- 16.4

Best group (3 five shot groups)- 1 1/4"
Worst - 2"

... and that is probably as good as my old eyes can do.  I'll move up the scale a bit, but if anyone wants to try this as a starting load, it worked good for me (not as much fun as black powder, though).

You are shooting better than I am capable of.

Sounds like you are having a good time with that pea shooter!

Roger that! ;D
Now, I can't shoot like that all the time, and like Theodore Upson remarked- "there are lots of the boys that can shoot better."  I'm hoping the data can help anybody who might not have a chrono or the area to test loads- one advantage to living on a ranch with no neighbors within shooting distance ;)

Here is what increasing the load by one grain does
AVG- 988 fps
Hi- 1011
Lo- 962
SD 15.4
all other data more or less the same.  Temp today is 25.8, barometer is 29.69, and the humidity is 37%

I used 25 grains volume of Triple 7, or 28 grains FFFG Goex, both under a 200 grain bullet in a Schofield case to duplicate the .44 Henry load. Triple 7 was VERY consistent and accurate

Interesting... I have an old Wobbly (Webley) MJ VI that I just bought a box of 50 casings ... and since standard .45 Loads are too nasty on the cylinder ( I like my right hand just the way it is, thank you), I had thought to load the .45Auto Rim pretty much the way the .45 Schofield was loaded ... might have to add a wadd or two to fill it up ...

Any thoughts, Gentlemen?

Wad,

I had a webley and loaded .454 diameter, 255 grain bullets for it.  I used the .45 Auto Rim data from the LEE loading manual.  They shot great!

Not sure if the project will ever go much further but I have obtained a Henry version of the short carrier for use in a future dream gun for SASS Frontiersman shooting.  The idea will be to use AJs Cowboy 45 Specials in one of the sawed off Uberti Henry rifles while still holding the required minimum number of rounds.  Right now money is even shorter than those 18" barls and not many cheap used ones are floating around on the market.  At any rate the short carrier would allow the use of that 45spec case or even the 44Rus case to mimic the old Henry round.  I am thinking that with a full length rifle one should be able to stuff in as many rounds as the originals held.

A few of my NCOWS pardsvhave used modified carriers to convert their 44 WCF 1860 Henry to .44 Russian. They work well and shoot all week. If I recall correctly,  the full length rifle will hold 16 Russians.

Are they shooting the 44 Russians in an unmodified 44-40 chamber, or has it been sleeved?  I fired a few 44 Russians from a 44-40 revolver about 10 years ago.  They worked fine, but there was a lot of blast and really dirty chambers.  I have a 45 blank carrier for a Henry in my stuff somewhere.  It would work for a 44-40 Henry with Russians....

The only modification was a new carrier.  They used this carrier:

I know of two guys that have done this and they both have well functioning rifles.  I don't believe any barrel or chamber work was done.  Corrections:  one rifle had a barrel sleeve done.  The other did not have any barrel or chamber work.

Here's the story of one of the rifles:

I have posted this before, but worth repeating.  My Henry had it's .44-40 chamber sleeved to .44 spl. just like my Open Tops.  Later had a fells modify the carrier face to allow feeding of .44 Russian, Colt or Special.  Wiull even feed a mixed bag of the three.
