Ben Johnson and Sgt Tyree...

I was watching "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" last night. It is my favorite western. I really like the hats worn by the troopers, especially Sgt Tyree's. So I sent a request to Baron Hats of California just asking about that particular hat. I got a great response (of course now I have to rob the payroll train:

Good hats do cost some dinero's and they shouldn't have to gar-on-tee....My dress hat is better than 10 years old...I paid almost 300 then hate to have to replace it....The hat in you avatar has already got the proper crush just the wrong color.(for Tyree's)

Ok.  That ain't a bad price for a GOOD hat.

But... it depends on what you require from a hat.

Mine has withstood torrential rains and never lost it's shape or leached color.  But it wasn't cheap.

I have also looked at hats and they are pricey!  I'm not a cheapskate, but I'll be damned if I pay over $125.00 for any type of hat!  My CAS hat is a 4 X Beaver Stetson and that's what I paid for it.

Try www.flinthat.com and www.mikescustomhatters.com  Flints is located in Lubbock tx & Mikes is in Longview Tx.  If you send either of them a pic of the hat they can duplicate the hat & for a lot less money. David Conklin at Flint's made me a hat just like Roy Rogers in 7X for $175.00 & that is a difficult hat to make because of the telescope crown. Mike made me a 7X cavalry hat with crossed sabers & a yellow acorn hat band for $112.00 6 or 7 years ago and that included tax & UPS.

You can probably find a pic of Ben as Sgt. Tyree by doing a search for SWAYR or Ben Johnson.

hey PJ I didn't know you lived in Lubbock till I read it in another post of yours. Shoot pard go by Flints on 34 ST. & have David make your hat. He'll put a contraption on your head that conforms to the shape of your head then uses that to make a pattern. He also makes a 1/2" thick cedar block the exact size & shape of your head & puts it inside the sweat band of your hat. That makes the hat retain its proper shape and keeps moths & silverfish from eating your hat.

You shoot with the Bounty Hunters out at Whitheral? Caleb & Sassy are real good friends. I read that there's a new club started up in Plainview too. You'll have to come on down to Midland & shoot with us at Comanche Trail Shootists.
