I haven't shot the Slix-shot nipples yet. I plan to next week. Today I installed a set on an 1851 Pietta. Before putting them in I noticed that the side vent holes were either almost completely filled in with  residual metal flakes from the drilling process, or ribbons of steel extended from the holes into the combustion chamber of the nipple.

I cleaned them up with a Swiss needle file, but I was wondering if everybody got their's in that condition, or if I just got a set that wasn't cleaned up after drilling?

Pettifogger

Didn't notice them when I put them in.  Shot two matches and removed them and cleaned them good.  Nothing in there now.  The holes are around .030".  A needle file is tapered and only the very tip will fit.  After your post, I checked my tool drawer and an acetylene torch tip cleaner works perfect.

I didn't notice any metal shavings in the ones I got.  Both sets have had a number of rounds through them in more than one pistol with cleaning in between.

Mike,

Yes, you may have seen some 'flash' in the vent holes.  Even after the dry honing there might still be some drill flash inside the plenum, but if you notice after a couple shots it will disappear.

A normal sitation.  I hope it didn't scare you.

Nah. I don't scare easy. LOL.

They cleaned up real easy. I was just wondering if they were all like that.

OK I gotta ask,

I've managed to locate, close with and get ahold of a pair of ROA's 7 1/2 fixed sight SS.  Took me several years of looking and choosing.  Spent some time at the range getting the hang of it, the most effective method down of loading, handling, etc.   Playing with loads, round ball, conicals, etc.   Went to my 1st match with them and had several problems.  Found out the ROA's I have were in the last group made.  There were some timing problems, etc, that I didn't encounter at the range when I was able to take my time.  Of course, its always the gun and not the shooter, am I right???? LOL.  Took the guns to my smith and he did a little work on them. Back out to the range and I couldnt repeat the malfunctions. Amazing what a little "familiarity" will do for you.  I've been reading some of the post, et al TRESO nipples, etc.  OF course this was after I ordered a couple sets from Ruger as potential replacements down the road for spare parts.

My question is, whats the advantage of these nipples?  I know its a novice question, but we gotta start somewhere.

Thanks for your time.

First of all, a lot of ROA shooters swear by the Ruger nipples.  If you don't have cap fit problems you may be good to go with what you have. BUT, if caps fall off or are difficult to seat then look to TRESO nipples and #10 Remington caps. The new Slixshot nipple look interesting as well.

Thanks Noz, I really havnt had any issues with the caps falling off.  Getting them on and seated is another thing.   I use Rem 10's and an old capper from my muzzle loading days long long ago in a valley far away.  I've also started taking the wooden ball starter with me to to loading table and use it to push on and seat the caps as it a nice 1/2" oak dowel.   What brand of "cappers" do folks use. I'm thinking of getting a new one as the exit point is pretty crudded up from years of corrosion.

For the ROA the Ted Cash snail capper is a lot more user friendly than the inlines.  A lot easier to add caps and they hold 100.  If the Remingrton 10s are a little hard to push on, try Remington 11s.  Same ID, just a shorter skirt so they seat easier.
