Durango Flinthart

March 9, 1847 and American expeditionary force under Gen. Winfield Scott lands at Vera Cruz, Mexico. A forty year old captain of engineers named R.E. Lee over sees the placement of the U.S. artillery batteries, on March 27 the city capitulates and the American Army sets it's sights on on Mexico City.

The Mexican American War was the training ground for the Officer Corps of both sides during the War of Northern Aggression.
If The US is the great land grabbing colonial power we're made out to be why didn't we just keep all of Mexico? I can only imagine that we may have never had a State vs State War and the State of Mexico would likely have been way better off as part of the US.
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

There were numerous political reasons for not wanting to keep Mexico.  For one, the South wanted it for more slaveholding territory and the North opposed that. For another, many feared that it would make about half of America's population Spanish-speaking Catholics.  This was at a time when the Irish were pouring in and anti-Catholic sentiment was at its peak.
