My wife gave me a Uberti Hombre with the Flat Blue finish for Christmas.

I am thinking about stripping it and doing a cold blue job on it.

Can anyone tell me if I strip it, is the finish smooth or what it will it be like under the flat finish?

One friend has told me that due to the finish it might look like it has small pock marks where it was sand blasted to make the flat finish stick better.

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe that the pistol has been blasted before that finish was applied. This is in an effort to reduce cost and pass that cost reduction on to the customer.......

You might come up with an antique look and be happier with the outcome.

On another note the one thing I find lackig here on CAS city is that there really is no "forum" for the Italian SAA clones. They don't really fit anywhere. Maybe the gunsmithing forum will get your post more attention?

Thanks Hoof,

I am going to go ahead and strip it, if it looks good I am going to polish it and leave it in the white.

I have encountered a problem with it already, after firing 3 rounds of TenX .45LC the cylinder bound up on me.

Had a hard time getting the cylinder out.  Found the cylinder was rubbing on the back of the frame on the left side.

Must have been a high spot.  Filed it down slightly where the finish had been rubbed.

No longer a problem.  I am not in love with he safety hammer, it appears to cause more problems than it prevents.

Again, thanks for your input.

We would certainly benefit from the inclusion of an Italian SAA Clone forum. The more guesswork removed the better.
A work in progress.

Howdy Warbucks,

After you get the mechanical issues sorted, don't bother striping the blue. Just polish the heck of it with Flitz or simichrome polish. You'll end up with a nice dark grey patina. Leave a little more of the matte in the low areas that wouldn't get as much wear as the high spots. I bet you'll be happy with that look. If not you can still go back and strip the gun.

Well, here she is my $250 Uberti Hombre with Gripmaker Grips.

Stripped the Flat Blue Finnish off and polished it up.

Turned out pretty well for the price.

Thanks to all for the advice.

Capt Billy

Warbucks,
Your project answered my questions completely!
I've stripped down one of my "Cap'n Billy" models to white, and it looks pretty
nice as it is!
(guess I have to pull the old camera out for some updates)

Captain Billy:

Show them off, we are all always glad to see someone else's projects.

I enjoyed doing mine and turned an ugly looking SAA into a great looking and great shooting revolver.

I recently ordered another Uberti Homber in .357 and plan on doing the same with it.

Can't beat the price $250 plus $20.00 shipping.

The only difference this time is that I plan to put on Stag or BONE grips.

Howdy Gunstrippers,

Here's a set of matte Rodeos that just had the flat finish polished with Flitz and a soft rag.

I like them as they still have a gray color the sort of looks like bluing that "turned" with age.
