Always good to have more Remington Shooters . . . .   :)
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

The Wind is Your Friend

Roadking

Hello,
I am new as well. Have many newbie questions! I just ordered an 1858 Remington New Army police .36 cal. with 6.5 barrel from Cabela's with starter pack. This will be my 1st bp gun. I understand that I can buy a replacement cylinder that can shoot centerfire cowboy loads (low pressure). In .38 cal.

Is that true or is it a hoax? Is it dangerous? Do you have to have the barrel machined out to fit the .38?

I'm kicking the idea around to get into Cowboy shooting with a friend at work and like the idea of using centerfire cartridges. I want to use this pistol for that. Is it a good choice for that or a mistake?

Its Here! Its Here!!!!! Uhhh ok now what?

By googleing I saw that the little slotted thingy is used for the caps!

The starter pack also came with a tube of bp pistol lube it looks yellow. Do I use that on the lead balls prior to inserting them in the cylinder? Or since the starter pack came with wads do I need to "seal" the balls to prevent flashover?

I have reloaded modern ammunition, mostly shotshells myself and rifle rounds at a buddy's place. This is my 1st bp and I want to make sure I do it right and of course safely.

Thanks in advance

The yellow lube sounds like "bore butter".I use that to lube the base pin when I shoot my BP guns, but not a bullet lube. Basically you have a couple of choices for loading, you can either use the lubed wads between the powder and ball, or put lube over the ball, in chamber mouth. Youll probably get about 100 posts next, arguing which is the best way. I just load powder, then ball, then crisco over the ball. The bore butter will work for that, but it gets runny, especially in warm weather, more runny even than crisco.

Okay!

Maybe I read too much but looking at geojohn.org's web page." Introduction to my articles on shooting the black powder revolver."
John says that I should put the powder, then patch, them a swab of lube and then the ball. He says it will reduce build up and help to eliminate chain firing. He goes on to say that putting lube in front of the ball just shoots it all out the barrel.

what do you guys think?

A wad and lube sounds like overkill to me. Lube over the ball will keep fouling softer in the bore, plus some of it goes out of the barrel/cylinder gap and reduces fouling in the base pin area. If your ball fits properly, shaving a small ring of lead when you seat it, then no spark is going to get in there anyway. All the chain fires I've ever had were from the other end. Discovered I had one nipple that was a bit tall, enough to cause the cap to fire from contact with the recoil shield.

WOO HOO!!!

Decided to go ahead to load and shoot my new remmie today!

Was sort of waiting for a buddy to shoot with and show me once ya know? But I couldn't wait!

It shoots fantastic! Almost no recoil and the report with no ear muffs wasn't bad at all !!!!

Also, I have learned why they call it Black Powder! Has nothing to do with what the powder looks like before you load it!
Its what your cleaning patches, hands, and everything else looks like after you clean your gun!

I am definately hooked!!
