Simply amazing that this article would resurface on the day my 1851 Colts arrived from Cabelas. These pistols are going to be converted to cartridge.

I'm going to shorten the cylinders, machine a back plate with loading gate and shoot extremely mild Cowboy 45 / 45-SLIM 170g bullets over BP.

Should be fun to see how this brass frame (with no top strap) holds up!

It is also amazing that the linked patent is just about a How-To for someone to make a back plate. Of course, not to step on any toes, these back plates will be for my own use. Never to be sold or traded.

I'm ordering a couple of spare cylinders to continue to use them as C&B revolvers when wanted.....

You might have a issue boreing out the chambers, there supper thin by the bolt notch

I'll need to do some measuring. In the end, it might be just as easy to simply order the conversion cylinders from Hoof Hearted .

Stay tuned!

Most that would undertake this will use an existing firing pin.
If you make on a lathe would be handy, some air or oil hardening drill rod and a furnace would also help.

i understand but what system holds the fireing pin in place under spring pushing back?many firearms have a frame mounted FP just can't see how it is done in that small of area.

I am assuming you are talking about a rebounding Firing Pin mounted in the plate.
The Kirst design as we have been discussing is simply staked in the hole or recess.
The design used on the Colt manfd back plates uses a threaded bushing (Italians use this also).

The "thin plate" conversions use a firing pin that is fashioned by "forging" onto the hammer.

Well, my CCs came in from HH..........Beautiful pieces of work. They fit the brass frame 1851 Piettas perfectly. Timed 100%. Too bad they are not going to be used in these pistols. My 1860 Sheriff models from EMF will be here Friday..........

BTW, here is a secret from EMF......If you go to their web site and sign up for the email newsletter, there are some amazing specials that only go out to folks on the list. I did that and got $60 off my two Sheriff pistols!

Go to the contacts section and ask to be put on the mailing list. You need to tell them Roy B sent you.

I was told there is a sale coming out in February with lots of "One Of" stuff etc.

Please don't spread this around too much.........lets keep all the great deals to ourselves....... ;D

I turned down stock on the lathe, cut an elongated notch on the top of it. drilled from the top of my plate into the firing pin hole and theaded it for a 6x48 screw the notch in the firin pin allowed for retintion and for the pin to float about an 1/8 of an inch
