44-40 New Model Army

Was there something deficient in my up bringing.  Sorta thought Remingtons were either 36 cal (really closer to 38) or 44 cal (really 45 in the bore)  Cannot for the life of me see why anyone would want to shoot a bullet that was way undersized like a 44 -40 out of a .45 bore.

Please enlighten me if there really was a .44 bored remington NMA

I ask as someone is seeking a 44-40 conversion cylinder for one.
