Howdy!

A friend of my Daughter asked me to see about repairing his old 1858/1863 Remington NMA, by CVA.  It has the very typical broken hand spring.  I tried doing the spring repair trick using a bobby pin, but the slot where the spring fits is buggered (from a repair before I got it, I suppose) and won't hold right.  Welding isn't an option, of course.

Will any of the Uberti parts as sold by VTI fit, since it appears I need to replace the whole hand/spring assembly?  My personal NMA is a Pietta and the parts won't interchange.  (Murphy's Law assures this, since the Pietta parts I have on hand won't fit, so I have to be more creative!)  The VTI site only lists parts from Pietta & Uberti as NMA manufacturers, not the ASM, Pedersoli, or any of the others.

Thanks!

Ho Steel Horse.

As far as I can remember CVA Remmies were ASM imports, VTI,  Might have a hand/spring still lying around, might be worth the `phone call!

Steel Horse,

I don't personally care for the "Bobby Pin" fix.  For what ever reason, Remington reproductions seem to have a real problem with hand springs.  I replace them by cutting off a standard Uberti hand spring and shaping the but so the little slot can be peened around the spring.  Usually a permanent fix.

That's a good suggestion, Coffinmaker - thanks.

Problem is, someone before me "fixed" the hand piece to where it won't properly hold a new spring.  I might TRY to cut a new slot, but there just isn't much "meat" left to work with.  And I don't have a good thin blade to try to make the cut.  IF there's enough metal to cut.  But I'll figure it out somehow.  I'll try an Uberti spring modified like you suggest.

Seeing as how you're in Indiana.....poke around a bit at the NMLRA site.  They have lots of vendors that might could have the parts you're looking for.  Parts can be found for NMA's and Colt's at 'Commercial Row' during their Nat'l shoots in June and Sept!  Not to mention the drop dead gorgeous flintlocks, caplocks, stocking wood.....you get the picture.

TallBB - thanks for the suggestion.

I've been looking for an excuse to visit Friendship.

(As if it weren't enough excuse by itself!)
