Treso cones

Hello all,
I purchased a set of Treso cones recently along with the Remington #11 caps. The caps slipped on nice, but slipped right off... That did not make me feel very safe  ???. I used the Remington #10 caps and all was well. I understood the Treso's to be designed for the Remington #11. Do I need to let the cones get broken in to get the caps to grab the cone?

Warmest regards,

Christopher

Use the #10s and never look back!  Best combination possible.

Nipples might get battered from use, but there is no such thing as breaking in a nipple.  It either works or it doesn't.  The Remington 10s have the same ID as the 11 but has a longer skirt so they fit the nipple more tightly.

The longer #10s grab farther down where the nipple shank diameter is greater. You'll have to pinch the #11s till uyou use them up.

Not ALL Treso cones are made for #10.  My Dragoon type use #11, but they are bigger than the 1851/1860 size normally used.  I believe ALL the Dragoon models and Walkers used bigger cones.

I've never had an issue with #11 Rems.

This is a quote from The Possibles Shop site:  (Home page) http://www.possibleshop.com/index.html

"TRESO nipples are made from Ampco, a tough alloy with a tensile strength of 118,000 psi, which is tougher than most steels used in muzzleloading barrels.  This material provides more resistance to repeated blows from the hammer, and the high thermal conductivity of Ampco alloy affects a faster heat dissipation.  This dissipation reduces erosion of the small base hole and assures a longer lasting nipple. All nipples have a small base hole (.028") to greatly reduce the amount of escaping powder gases.  Many muzzle loading experts feel an added benefit of the small base hole is the hot gases from the percussion cap are more concentrated and uniformly directed against the powder chamber. Use #11 caps. AMPCO Nipple shoulder size: Rifle Nipples .214" - Cap & Ball Nipples .174" - Muskets Nipples .250".

"These nipples are made from the toughest AMPCO alloy available. This alloy with its tensile strength of 118,000psi is tougher than most steels used in muzzleloading barrels and provides more resistance to repeated blows from the hammer. The high thermal conductivity of the AMPCO alloy affects a faster heat dissipation, thus reducing erosion of the small base hole and assuring a longer lasting nipple. These nipples will also not rust or corrode. All nipples have a small base hole (.028) to greatly reduce the amount of escaping powder gasses. The rifle and pistol nipples are designed for the use of number 11 percussion caps except those made specifically for muskets. O/S signifies oversize nipple.

If #10 Rem caps work, then use 'em ... but ...

Mako has a LOT of good information about the VERY confusing percussion cap and nipple category.   Sizes of caps aren't always consistent, the manufacturers sometimes goof, and the list goes on.  I use Rem #11 caps on ALL my cones, but #11 CCI caps are mostly too big.  (The "skirt length" is the main difference, if I remember, because the diameter is the same between the #11 & #10 caps.)

Craiso, this is a subject that CAN cause you to tear your hair out!

I believe you'll find Mako's reports (including photos and drawings) up in the Dark Arts section at the top of the Darksider's Den "menu" of posts.  PLUS other tiddly-bits of BP lore & knowledge.

When I set my Ruger Old Armies up with new nipples I called The Possibles Shop for advice.  I had a large supply of CCI Magnum #11 caps on hand for my long range rifle and wanted to use them with the ROA's.  They supplied me with nipples that have worked flawlessly for about three years now.

I have since added a pair of Pietta 1858's and a pair of 1860 Armies (one Uberti and one Cenature) to my collection and all have Treso nipples  installed.  I do not have any problems with any of these guns and #11 caps.

I have read through Mako's lengthy post; a very instructive post. I bought mine from Track of the Wolf. The part number that I purchased was for the Pietta # PIR-A (Nipple, 6-.75mm thread, for FAP - Pietta Remington, Pietta Colt, Pietta Le Mat replica revolvers, #11 CCI or Remington cap, #11 cap, Ampco bronze). After all the research, I was simply surprised that the #10's fit better than the #11's. I will stick with the #10's  ;)

Like I said, use what works best!

Perhaps when they (the manufacturer - House of Muskets) first invented the TRESO cones, the #11 caps of the time fit best, but the manufacturers MAY have changed dimensions slightly.  I don't know WHY they would, but ...

Anyway, the Ampco cones (TRESO) are the best and it's great that you like 'em!

Have fun makin' all that lovely, white smoke!
