Hey guys,
I couldn't find an original front sight to replace mine and was going to try the Taylor-Spencer's front sight
but it is wayyyy off spec. I figured it would be identical, but it's dimensions are much diferent than my original's dovetail.
I don't think that my front sight had been modified like my rear sight has, but can somebody confirm the front sight specs pictured below? I also posted pics of the Taylor front sights for future reference.
Let me know what ya'll think.
Oh yeah! Herbert. You were right. I re-measured my barrel, crown to breach, and it's 20 inches.

Thanks to everybody for the help I've gotten on my project so far!  ;D

Herbert

Measuring my original Burnside Spencer the sight width is .2515 inch wide and .375 inches long and no sighn of a dovtail,as these carbines were checked with guages before exceptance I belive your front sight has been modifyed to fit a non standard dove tail sight,to me this is a good thing as you can choose a sight that is the right height and still be corect to the original modifycations that were made

;D Thanks Herbert! That's exactly what I suspected.

Any suggestions as to a sight that might work? Where I might find such a sight?

Herbert

By the look of the back sight I would say it is a home made one or a blacksmiths job,so I would find a blade sight of a muzell loader that is tall and file it to suit the dove tail then once you get it shooting you can file the front sight down to suit the distance you will be shooting

Thanks for your advice Herbert.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I'll see what I can come up with.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of the Spencer Shooters Society!! ;D

Dave - I would call Larry Romano (695-2066 http://www.romanorifle.com/)  He makes his Spencers from the original specs

Thanks Pvt. Greg.

I think ol' Herbert has answered my question though. My barrell has definately been re-worked at some time in the past to accomodate hunting sights. Hence the dovetal cut for the front sight. The original spencer front sight is not dovetail mounted but merely soldered to the barrell. I've got an over sized steel blade coming from Track OfThe Wolf. My gun has a huge front dovetail and I needed to find something to fill the gap. I'll have to do some work on the sight to make it fit, but I'm thinking that's the only way to find something that will fit that dovetail and look authentic.

Have a good one! :D
