Most folks that mount a tang sight on their Shiloh buffler guns remove the #102 sporting buckhorn sight. Gotta be a bucket or two of them out there.

I'm in need of one if anyone wants to part with it. I'm not happy with the Lawrence rear sight on my new Shiloh 50-70 carbine as it prints too low at 100 yds 'down' and too high with the ladder up.

You need to file the front sight down until poi matches poa at 100 yds with the sight down. With the sight stood up, the slide needs to be moved up out of the way, then using the U at the bottom of the sight should be your 200 yd zero. The slide all the way down is for 300 yds...

If I can remember highschool geometry or trig works out to about .010555 off the front sight per inch at 100 assuming 38 inch sight radius.

I'm hoping to keep the front blade at it's current height as it prints right on POA at 50 yds as is. That will be a last resort.

I regard the carbine as a 100 yd max hunting proposition. It isn't a question of hitting the animal, it's a question of hitting it where I want to - a heart shot.
I've got the Military Rifle also in 50-70 and the issue lawrence is working out just fine as per what Ranch 13 said.

I am clueless on the trajectory of the 50-70, but I would think that filing the front sight to point of aim at 100 yds would still not put you over 2 inches or less high at 50 yds.
There's no difference in rear sight height between the lawrence and the buckhorn/semibuck rear sights. The biggest difference is the lawrence has adjusment marked to 1100 yds, and with a longer staff. The others quit at 800 and are about 1/2inch shorter staff.

Thanks, Ranch 13!

You may have saved me a few bucks. Looking in the Shiloh catalog, it appeared that the Buckhorn might be a tad higher than the Lawrence.
I did mount a new MVA mid-range tang sight on the carbine, but it looked plain stupid. Also prevented a decent grip on the stock.

I don't mind being 4" high at 50 if it puts me on the money at 100. As for the trajectory of the 50-70, the term 'rainbow' comes to mind. But - anything it connects with goes down!

The thing about filing on the front sight, is if it doesn't work you're not out much, they're very easy to replace.
