I know nothing about saddlemaking.  I met Allan Byrne on line www.oldpueblosaddle.com when looking for some authentic holsters and belt for a pair of Richards-Mason Conversions.  He is a great guy to talk with and might have some good advice.  The holsters and belt he made for me are outstanding.

Almost all of our trees have come from Ritter/Francis Bowden over the years.  They cost a little more but are solid honest trees.  Too many of the other companies we tried did not cinch the trees while drying which allowed them to warp.  They good people if a little slow on delivery but worth waiting for as the quality has always been there.

Tearing down some old saddles will give you several ways to put in the ground seat but you will just have to try them to see what you like best.  With the cost of everything today building a good saddle is not cheap.  The last steer roping saddle that we built cost so much that it was the last.

Before buying any books on saddlery see if your library can get them on a loan program or look for them in the internet.  I bought several supposed how to books that were just written for sales and left out the things that would allow you to really do the job.  If there is time in the next few days will look up the good ones and see what I can recommend.

I've got 2 really good roping saddles with 18" seats that I HAD made for me. I don't think I will wear them out in my lifetime so I don't think I will try making a saddle. ::)
Swinging a rope is alot of fun unless, your neck is in the loop.
