Many thanks to Dick Dastardly for his great help and advice in getting me started shooting Black Powder in my Sharps Also thanks to Springfield Slim of Whyte Leather Works for those fine Big Lube bullets.

I've never shot real Black Powder before so I went to the range yesterday only to try out my Black Powder loads. To my surprise I did some of the best shooting ever with my Sharps. Attached is a picture of my last target. The last two shots were in the bull. Never ever shot like that with smokeless! I will not put smokeless through my Sharps again!

I shot at 100 yards. My rifle is an Armi Sport from Taylors in .45-70 with a 30" barrel and a single trigger. It is fitted with a Marbles Tang sight. I ended up with 60 grains of 1-1/2  F Swiss, a 400 grain Big Lube bullet from Whyte, Winchester Magnum primers and a .060" thick Vegetable wads compressed around .100". I used a 24" drop tube that I built.

My eyes are not that good and I'm not a good shot so I was really happy with yesterday's results.

A very promising start Johnny.  Your last two shots indicate that you can look forward to slamming some steel at the next SASS long range match.  Keep on smokin'!!

Actually, all but one shot were in the bull. The last two were in the X ring. The bull is the black part of the target. What some folks call the X ring is the Bull's Eye. Good shootin'

bull's-eye
Noun:

1.The center of a target in sports such as archery, shooting, and darts.
2.A shot that hits such a target center.

Howdy Junkman,

Thank you for the clarification. Prior to shooting my Sharps, the last time I fired a Rifle at 100 yards was in 1959 in Boot Camp at Fort Leonard, MO.

Thats a heap of dead Injuns or meat in the pot!

I can't wait to get afield with my trapdoor or 1881 made 1873 with black and big lube boolits, but I'm such a cripple lately the critters are safe for now.

Excuse me, you know we do shoot back? As well as hide, duck, dodge and depart?   ;D

Johnny that is some plumb nice shootin ... that sort of thing happens when you use real gun powder.   :)

I REALLY gotta hit the Long Range match this month. We have a 200 yard range but I rarely go as I already shoot 2 other cowboy matches a month and it gets difficult to find the time, what with kids and work and all. But I have a cople of 38-55's I need to wring out, a Winchester lever and my Buffalo Classic. Haven't shot either in over a year.
