I just got a new toy in the mail for $185 total. It's a Pietta 1860 Army, dated BC, which is actually in decent shape despite the buggered screw slots and complete lack of oil on any part except the loading lever. The hand spring is history and the cam won't reliably catch the cylinder bolt, but the charge holes line up with the bore and the hammer doesn't batter the nipples. All in all, I think, a good deal for a solid base on which to work.

Looking around for parts, I notice that VTI Gun Parts wants mucho dinero for just about everything, Dixie Gun Works has no hands in stock and seems to think a complete screw kit is worth its weight in gold, Numrich Arms is sold out of nearly everything (and is fairly expensive to boot), and Taylor's Firearms seems to have decent prices and doesn't mention being out of what I need. I've never used Taylor's before, does the assembly (dat's youse guys) have warm fuzzies about Taylor's shipping and service?

Comments, advice, offers to buy it off me for $(large number followed by many zeroes) appreciated.  ;D

My Dear Frenchie -

As I read my way down your list, I see you hit all the sources with which I am familiar but one:
Cabelas has an internal parts kit for $25, it is not great, but somewhat acceptable... the cylinder bolt is ok; the hand is... adequate; the hammer and trigger are good, and the springs ... function.

Regarding screws, I concurr, at Dixie $22.50 plus perhaps $8 shipping for 14 screws (which may not all fit) is quite pricey. Finding the correct metric screws any other way is difficult; once when I was in dire straights I got some socket head metric screws from the hardware store and turned the heads down on my drill press.

Because of the poor quality of screws even from Dixie, I am actually considering an attempt to turn down available pan-headed screws or even making my own from annealed drill rod :-(

Unfortunately I cannot comment on Taylor's

i hope this helps

You are quite welcome sir. They have internals kits for both Pietta Colts and Remmies. Would that they offered screw kits as well.

Another suggestion.  If and when you can, buy "junk" guns.  Guns that others no longer use because of one major problem or another and just want to get rid of.  No matter what brand, they're a good source for screws and other internal parts.  Sometimes you can also score good cylinders and barrels.  ;)

The prices!  Dang!  I'm sure glad I scored all my spare parts back when the prices were "reasonable".   ;D

I've used Taylor's to get parts on more than one occasion.   Their service & promptness has been excellent.

Another possibility is Dixie Gun Works, here in Tennessee.  They have all kinds of parts for almost any BP revolver.

I maintain a parts inventory...obtained primarily from DGW. They are sold-out on some parts from time-to-time...so, I find it easier to get em, while I can.

BTW, my last Pietta was obtained by flashing a $100 bill to a fellow at a gun show. I saw him trying to get trade $$ from a dealer against a cartridge pistola (decided C&B was too complicated). He jumped at my cash offer. This was for a new condition revolver, no box (one less thing to keep track of).

Never know, it could happen again.
