A couple of uears back, realizing that I hadn't shot either of my .45 ACPs in years, I swapped a next-to-new Series '70 Colt for a 4" S&W M29. It was one of those 'win-win' deals. We were both happy with the swap, and I think I got the better deal as the Colt rattled and had a tooth gritting trigger pull. It was box stock.

The reason I got away from the .45 ACP was I got tired of picking up the brass after a good range session. I kept my tricked out Gold Cup out of nostalgia, as it was my main gun in the years I shot IPSC. Now it's in 'street carry' mode, the Clark 'Pin Gun' barrel replaced by the original Colt 5" barrel.
Then I read about 'Wild Bunch' and bought a Remington R1 1911. At the same time, I discovered that wonderful gizmo called a 'nut picker' sold by Lee Valley. Now I really enjoy my .45 ACPs again! I litter the range, moving from one spot to another, as most of the time I'm alone on a 100 yd pistol range - it's hell, but somebody's got to do it .... ;>) I rove from shooting paper, to IPSC sils to steel gongs at 25 and 50 yds.

With the nut picker, policing the brass is a piece of cake. Where was this wonderful gadget back when I was burning 500 rds a week in IPSC?

I was surprised that some of my mags would not function well in both guns, but I got that sorted out. The other surprise was while the Gold Cup feeds anything and everything (200 SWCs, 230 TCs, 230 RNs), the R1 1911 had the occasional bobble feeding both 230 RN and 230 TCs. That's OK, as I find the 200 SWCs a pleasure to shoot and the gun groups them well.

Still haven't gotten to a 'WB' event, but with either of these 1911s, my .45 Colt 'Lightning' pump and Win '97, I'm well armed.

I gather (ha ha) this is the gizmo you speak of.  I've seen a very similar item featured in adverts in the odd gun rag I pick up from time to time.  Should scoop one up next I'm there.

I have one of those and its ok, but I got a pecan picker at Isams (sp?) Hardware in Coffeyville KS this summer and it's better. I wanted to buy some .45 LC but they quit handling ammo in the 1960's (good thing the Dalton Gang had already been dispatched)

Having tried both of Pitspitr's nutpickers ( is that a tongue twister?), I prefer the roller type, but depending on the "lie," there was some brass that the pecan picker picked that the nut picker picked not. ::)
