This set contains episodes of "The Real West" a series from the early 1990's hosted by Kenny Rogers.

The episodes are excellent.  The History Channel still airs these shows about once a week.  They are usually at on at odd hours.

I have one of my TIVO DVR's set to pick these up when they air.

If you have History Channel, you don't need to buy this set.

A good set for beginners, kind of an Old West History 101.  I wouldn't spend the money myself but I sure wouldn't tell someone with just a basic knowledge not to buy it.  Just like any of those HC shows, get a bunch of knowledgeable historians together to watch it, make sure there is no alcohol, guns or knives handy. ;)

I agree with Del.  And another thing ... ignore all the experts (especially G.M., the BiigMoney auction guy - who shall remain nameless) who show how to load a Henry rifle ... in a way practically that practically guarantees trouble!  You do NOT load a real (or repro) Henry rifle by opening the mag tube and dropping the cartridges into the magazine tube!!!  No, NO NO!  Never!

But it IS a decent series, as Del says.  Sort of an "Olde West 101."  And it's entertaining.

I see these at garage sales and flea markets, at far lesser prices - if I wanted the set, I'd look there, first.

For a beginner, the Time-Life book series - 'The Old West' - will give more information, and volumes of that series are everywhere, for anywhere from $1.00 - $3.50 a copy - a far cry from their original cost.

Ask your Librarian.

Often, they'll order it for you via an 'Inter-Library Loan' from another facility, and you'll have it for about three weeks.

It's a great system - bringing hard-to-find books to smaller libraries who simply don't have the budget.

Cash,

Get on ebay.  Search for "Time Life Old West".   You'll find loads of old copies of these books.  As St. George noted, many are in the $1 to $3 range.   I think the entire set is 25 books.  I collected a complete set over the past few years this way.  Costs me less than $70.  I looks at those books all the time.  Great investment.

Books OToole

There are 26 volumes in the Time-Life Old West series, plus a soft covered Index.  The index is kind of hard to find and goes for $ 20 and up.  Some of the 26 are harder to come by and consequently run a little higher.  Other than the index, the next hardest one to find is The End and the Myth.

You might want to check used book stores. I used to come across Time-Life books in Half Price Books all the time. They even offer them for sale online. http://www.hpbmarketplace.com/booksearch?keyword=time+life+old+west
