Black powder fouling in 30" Highwall(45-70)...

Howdy all.
I have just hit a "Eureka" smokeless load, but I CANNOT duplicate or even approximate it with FFF.
See attached svp. 15 shots @ 200 yds, 500 gr bullet. I will straighten out the windage next trip to range.
One big problem is... how can I keep the bore from fouling out during a match when using The One True Powder?
There isn't enough room for a lube cookie + powder + 500 gr boolit.
I have just fashioned a blow-tube, but can't imagine that would provide enough moisture to keep the fouling moist.
Those fancy bullets with huge lube grooves are not an option at this point, thank's anyway Dick  ;)

Button,
Try some KIK brand powder from the most recent lot. Powder Inc carries it. You will find that it will foul less.

Another option is to try finding an original 500 grain Winchester mold. It carried more lube than any other conventional type bullet.

You're doing much better than I can, but I can blame really bad eyesight.

The name of the game with Black Powder and a single shot rifle is not so much to eliminate fouling as it is to keep it moist and consistent from shot to shot. A blow tube will do it for you. But you have to blow a few long, deep breaths. Breath deep, then blow real slow through the tube so all the moisture in your lungs has a chance to settle in the fouling. Repeat a couple of times. One friend of mine actually times his breaths, for consistency from shot to shot.

Fire a fouling shot or two first, then let the blow tube do its work. Don't even try to include the fouling shots in the group.

Of course, if you are shooting against the clock, you are screwed. Around these parts, most long range matches are just for accuracy, they are not against the clock. So we can breathe down the barrel as long as we like.

You might want to try the Montana Precision brand of bullets from Cabelas. They carry about as much lube as you are going to see in just about any off the shelf BP bullet this side of the Big Lubes.

Another thought is adding a .030 thick fibre wad between the bullet and the powder. It will help scour out a little bit of the fouling.

I ain't tried the new KIK yet but in my experience Schuetzen leaves less fouling in the bore than Goex. Almost as clean burning as Swiss but about the same price as Goex. You might want to change to FFg for 45-70.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Get off the 3f and get into 2f powder.
How is the bullet sized according to the groove diameter?
What primer are you using, large rifle or large pistol are preferred over any magnum primer.
Crimp? If you're crimping very hard that'll bugger up an other wise good load rather quick.
How to keep from fouling out during a match? Start with your lube, some lubes just leave a heavy foul especially in hot weather. Powder brand will have a big affect on fouling out.
When the temps hit 90+ and the humidity gets down in the teens you'll need to work out a good wiping routine.A wiping routine that your rifle doesn't like can also bugger accuracy.
Other than that learing to use your blowtube properly will help keep fouling troubles down.

My 45-70 Remington roller doesn't have that problem.

If the load just isn't working for ya, why don't ya back down on the 3F a bit and put in a lube cookie or lubed wad in the newly found real estate?

You can compensate a bit for extra bullet drop, whereas it is hard to compensate for erratic patterns due to fouling.

What's your loading data to start with including the 500gr bullet your using?  Sounds like you want a MAX velocity and FASTEST is not necessarily the load for the 45-70.  If I can put a 540gr bullet on a 1000yd target with 68gr of CTG or FFg or even Fg - so can you

You can also seat the bullet OUT if you want to hot rod the load

Ranch gave you sound advice.  Even the 2010 lot of KIK 1.5Fg will work good.  It has nearly the same grain sieve ratio as FFg
