Seems I read nothing later than a 1911 auto.  For argument's sake what other early autos are fair game?  I think there was a Bergmann carried by Duke's motorcycle riding son hunting for the kidnapped Grandson.  Supposedly, Wild Bill's show he is alleged to use a Borchardt (1893...or C93), then there's the C96 Broomy.  1902 Luger?  Just curious!  Bill

Shotgun Franklin

I have no idea what's legal for WB but there were several earlier Colt Models, there were numerous early European Autos???????
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

Major 2

Though I have no Dog in the fight....I'd like to point out
being as how the Wild Bunch Class was base on the movie they should allow the "Star Model B"
that is what was use in the movie  ;)
when planets align...do the deal !

Howdy Bunch,

There's SASS Wild Bunch and there's your clubs WB.

The guns legal for SASS WB are what SASS says are legal. Your club can probably do what the members want. One club I shoot at works roughly on the idea that if it was available by 1912, use it. I use a 1911, a Luger and a Remington model 11 autoloader shotgun (when it works). I agree that a C96 would be way cool. I think that a .351 Remington Auto Rifle would be neat also, although I'm not sure of the date.

As far as costuming, I can't believe that there is no Mexican outfit (or for that matter German) allowed for SASS WB. My WB persona is an American spy posing as a German military advisor. We have a lot of fun at our club on WB days.

Rev, Mexican outfits are allowed in WB. Even the Greman costume should work (late 19th century and early 20th century cowboy and military)
WB handbook page 2-3

CLOTHING AND ACCOUTERMENTS
SASS Wild Bunch Action Shooting is a combination of historical reenactment and
Saturday morning at the matinee. Participants may choose the style of costume they wish to
wear, but all clothing must be typical of the late 19th century and early 20th century cowboy and
military. Emphasis is put on period US military from 1900 to 1916. Period western dress is
allowed such as Pike, Dutch, Lyle, or Tector in the closing scene of the Wild Bunch movie (e.g.,
Western style pants with or without suspenders, and long sleeve western shirt). Vests are
optional. Boots must be SASS legal. Legal SASS headgear must be worn. Mexican dress is
also appropriate

Bill, the 1911 is the only pistol allowed in sanctioned WB matches, however many local clubs allow a variety of firearms. We allow pistols till 1917. Good Luck :)

Er....you perhaps mean a .351 Winchester Model 1907 or Remington Model 8 self loading rifle calibers .25, .30, .32, or .35 Remington......... Winchester also made the M1905 in .32 and .35WSL, and the M1910 in .401. All were available before 1912.
Some of the various Winchester self loading rifles saw use in the Great War, primarily by France. These also fit into the "Public Enemies" catagory some 20 years later.......

I highly recommend a visit to the SASS WB Forum, and a little quality time reading the SASS WB Handbook. ::)

And FWIW, Wild Bunch Action Shooting is NOT based on the movie!  The Wild Bunch side match, which is a 4 man team event, IS based on the movie........

Just watched Public Enemy a lot of guards were carrying the winchesters.  Lots were used in prisons as well.

It would also be cool to use pistols with detachable shoulder stocks in the rifle events.  A stocked Mauser C-96 or Arty Luger LP08 would be neat.  Of course a Borchardt C-93 would be the ultimate....

I have used my C-96 as both a pistol and rifle in a LOCAL "wild bunch" match.  Reloading time, and time it takes to attach the stock makes this "style points" only.

I was at a match recently where I was engaged in a wonderful conversation about the intricacies of the John Browning Pistol.  The person on the other side of the conversation happened to be a member of the WBAS rules committee, although that had nothing to do with our conjectures at that time.

Some Yahoo walks up, interrupts our pleasant conversation and wants to know why some OBSCURE, OBSOLETE, WORN OUT, pistol that he's had in the BACK OF HIS CLOSET for 57 YEARS isn't legal for use in Wild Bunch competition.  Then, after it was explained that a single manual of arms is necessary for SAFETY, and that a single type of pistol is important to having a LEVEL PLAYING FIELD, the guy proceeded to argue the point.

I honestly don't know how the committee shaping this new game can put up with the constant jabber about "why can't this be legal in WBAS competition?"

Buy a 1911.  Borrow a 1911.  The game uses 1911 type pistols.  PERIOD.

What is so damned hard about that????

single manual of arms for SAFETY?  Then how does SASS msnage to SAFELY use Rugers, Colts, S&Ws, Remingtons, Cap n Ball, lever rifles/shotguns, pump action rifles/shotguns and who knows what during side matches?  Level playing field, there is no such thing!

PJ Hardtack

One of the long established west coast Canuck CAS clubs has an "Outlaw" class. It allows period handguns from the WB era and pistol calibre carbines other than the minimum .40 calibre. Not sure what they allow for shotguns.

I'm all for inclusive matches. Wouldn't bother me one whit to shoot with a guy armed with a Mauser Broomhandle (or a P-08 9mm aka as a 'Luger') and a .357  "Lightning" pump action rifle. If he had a Browning squareback semi-auto for a shotgun, fine.

The best, most well prepared shooters will, still win, equipment notwithstanding. It's just a game and nothing sacred.

+1 :)  Because they just need to argue is my take - that and it gives them an excuse not to play!  I think the best way to shut them up is let them put their actions where their mouth is.  Most don't shoot WB, won't shoot WB, and if you did let them shoot the junk from the back of the closet they would not do it more than once or so, because it's simply not suited to the game.  They may argue the point, but only because they are ignorant about WBAS.  They think it's Cowboy with a 1911. :D   Those that really want to play, will "gun up" and do so.  The "maybewanabes", will not. ;)

We had a pard that was constantly whining about why couldn't he use his double barrel shotgun in WB.  So we said, "go for it."  After the match, he was heard conplaining that the 97 shooters had an unfair advantage because they could load up the magazine with 6 rounds! :D

I don't want to argue, just shoot some other guns.  Maybe not all the time, but once in a while would be nice. If my times are slow, that's my problem.  I'm not interested in gaining an advantage in "the game", just having fun.

The 1905 Win was a 35 win SL, 1907 model was the .351, same bullet longer case sort a 38 vs 357 mak thing Think the 1910 brought us the .401.  Inherited a 1905, one of theses days will get around to getting dies, brass and bullets.  Should be a fun cast bullet gun.  They have a tendancy to throw brass into next county.
