Does it make much difference in the primer for a brass shotshell?

I have some Magtechs that take the small pistol primer and a couple of hundred old hammer doubles that take a 209 primer.  I used to load the hammer doubles with smokless as the intructions indicated that any standard loading recipe would be fine (and they have worked out fine).

Wondering if the 209 primer might be too hot with a Black Powder load.

Not sure at all what an "old hammer double" hull is, but a 209 primer is fine with black powder.

I load black powder with 209 primers all the time and I usually shoot a damascus barreled hammer gun. The issue isn't what the gun can take, but what is the shell made to take. Some brass shells take 209 primers, but most take large pistol primers. You need to use whatever the shell was made for.

I have both types of brass shells. My Hammer Double shells, with 209 primer pockets I use only for smokless. The Hammer Doubles have a Teflon base wad and My feeling is that the BP will burn the base wads, making them loose and possibly sticking in the barrel. Just my opinion you understand. The Magtec with the large pistol pocket is used for BP CAS/SASS loads.

I also have RMC brass shells which use 209 primers. Here the base wad is solid brass. I load & use either type of powder.

BTW; the RMC's I use only for hunting loads. At $5.00 each I am careful where they drop on extraction.

The "hammer double" cases are regular stock magtechs that have been drilled out to accept a 209 primer.  This leaves the the base a little skimpy to support the 209s so the teflon ring has been inserted in an attempt to support the primer.  I have one box of these which remain unused as the regular Magtechs work jes fine thankee!

The magtechs are intended for the large Pistol primer.  I don't think it matters which one.  I use CCI 350 LPM primers because I have a bunch, and I only use about 60 gr FFg GOEX.

I also use CCI 350 MLP primers in my Brass Magtec shells. It seems, they give me a better ignition & burn with my 2F BP loads.

I have used standard LP Winchester's. I prefer the mags as they give me better preformance.

Somewhere I saw a video showing the ignition spark of various Primers. The CCI mag primers gave the greatest amount of fire.

I was given a bunch of Magtechs that were drilled out for a 209 primer.   They work just fine with black powder.  Shot 20 or so of them yesterday made with Goex FFG.

Thank you all.  I never thought about the teflon support.

Again thank you all!
