I asked Will this but I'd like to also ask you guys what thickness leather you use for saddle bags?
I'm using Wills patterns and can recommend them.  ;)

This is my leather options from WC as I will need 4 to 5 hides.

Skirting   8-10 oz   Russet   UT   $124.00
Skirting   10-12 oz   Russet   SP   $126.00

Carving   8-10 oz   Russet   SP   $107.00

This seems to thin for saddle bags.
Has anyone ever used 10-12 oz Skirting? I tend to gravitate toward heavier leather beings from what I have seen after using a leather item consistently it tends to get real "Flopp-sie" if you know what I mean.
Next month I'll ask about rifle scabbard thickness.  ;)
TIA,
Duke

Me...I would use the skirting leather in 9-10 oz.

Saddle bags = 9-10 oz.
Rifel scabbards = 9-10 oz...same as a holster...unless taht is you are carrying a Barret rifle

I have some smaller original F A Meanea saddle pockets and they are 8-9 oz for the body and flaps and the gusset is around 3-4 oz.

I recently made a couple like the originals.

8-10 is what I use on my bags and scabbards.

I use 5-6 oz or whatever I happen to have on hand thats thin on the gussets of the bags.

There are times when I think my saddle bag is too thick, but its fine and has held up over the years so far.

Thanks all for the replies.
If anyone else can add to it would be much appreciated.

I have made all kinds of saddlebags and I have to wonder at their use. If your going strictly for looks and tooling then 9-10 0z is perfect.
if your going for utility then I always  built mine out of 8 oz or heavier oil tan.  The bags were assembled inside out ,double stiched at rhe seams then turn right side out . with large oversized flaps they will repel water or hold it if the need be.
It is my preference when making working gear that will last.
