Just Traded for a Spencer model 1860 as was looking for Info on serial Number

The dealer told me nov-dec 1864

Gun has a really nice patina , wood is really nice for its age with no cracks, barrel shows excellent rifling over all very clean for almost 150 or so year old gun.

its a 22" barrel

no front sling attachment just a barrel ring

not sure but i think its a 56-50 caliber - maybe someone can clarify.

Trying to find out what unit this may have been attached to,and who this gun issued was issued to if possible.

I can't get at my serial number lists now, but someone should be able to give you data from the Springfield Research lists.  If this is a M1860, with a 22-inch barrel, it is most likely a .56-56.  If you have a .50 cal. bullet, try dropping it down the barrel.  It will probably drop clear through, as the .56-.56 (usually omit the decimal point on the second number or maybe both decimals)) has a tapered bore from .545" at the breach to .535" at the muzzle on most of the ones I've measured.  As the original cartridge used an externally lubed, heel bullet, you can either try to find a mould for one (Rapine is out of business  ) or try to find a .535" hollow base bullet mould, cast dead soft lead and you can use cut down .50-70 brass.
