Those look like a lot of fun, but I'm not ready for that type of competition yet.  It is a goal of mine within the next couple of years to do so, however.  I've just recently begun to get serious about long-range and get a rifle capable of it.

Have you seen the 40-65 capable of competing in these types of matches?  I have one of the Browning High Walls in 40-65 set up as a BPCR rifle.  I have also recently acquired a C Sharps 1875 in 45-70 with the heavy 30" octagon barrel (11.5# rifle) that should compete with the proper tang sight.

Speaking of sights, I assume it would be necessary to have a long-range sight for these distances, instead of the mid-range?

Yes the 40-65 is a popular round, it can have some troubles at the 1000 yd line with wind, but then again nothing in the bpcr world gets by real well with winds at long distance.
Depending on the height of your front sight, and who's midrange sight you have it may very well make the 1k line.
Right off the top of my head the wifes roller in 40-65, used about 210 minutes to get to the 1k line with a 400 gr snover and 58 grs of goex 3f express.
Don't wait, get out and do it, you'll learn more in a days shooting at one of those type matches than you will in a year of messing around at home.
I believe there's a "buffalo shoot" at Pecos in October, if I get word of it I'll let you know.
You can also with a little bit of planning make a pretty nice vacation out of a shooting spree in eastern Montana in June and Sept.

That's almost the identical load I've ended up with in my 40-65.  I use the same bullet with 57 grains of Goex 3F Express. My Browning will shoot just about 1 MOA with it at 100 yards. It's nice to know I'm headed in the right direction and the load will performa well at longer distances. 

I recently began shooting at a new CAS club on private land whose owner has a 1,000 yard range already set up.  He's offered its use, and I just need to find the time to take him up on it.  My travel schedule for work hasn't allowed that for the last 6 months.  Realistically, I'm going to wait until the weather cools down some - 100+ and high humidity in South Texas is not pleasant to spend a day lying in the sun tinkering with the rifle!

I'm not sure which manufacturer made the sight for the Browning, but I've been told it is MVA.  It looks like it from the photos on their website.  At any rate, it has 250 minutes of elevation, so from your comment it looks like it may be tall enough to reach 1000 yards.

Now you've got me really intrigued.  I'll have to get out to the 1,000 yard range and see if I can dial it in.  What size groups should I realistically expect at that distance if I want to be competitive? 

The notices for the shoots you referenced above mention prone or sitting.  Is that using cross sticks?

Those Browning sights are made for Browning by a machine shop in Utah. They are good sights, the only shortcoming is sometimes not quite enough windage adjustment.

If you have everything going your way, a 36 inch group (3.5 moa) or tighter isn't out of the question.

Yes all the shoots allow crossticks, and a good set of crossticks that you and the rifle are comfortable with can really help your scores.

Have fun with that long range stuff, but be forewarned it is very addictive.

Will do.  It's a shame I have to work for a living - it takes so much time and interferes with the important things in life.

Are there other forums or sources of information to locate matches in all areas of the country?  I'd like to find something closer to home (Texas) to start out with.  Once I get a little experience I'd love to make a vacation trip to other areas to shoot.
