Hi pards

I have been sitting here getting ready to buy a new rifle . I am shooting a pair of Open Tops by Uberti . They are chambered in 45 Schofield and my brass is Starline .I am shooting 25gr of 2f Goex in my O/T's and would love to match them with a 73.

My dumb question of the day is :
Will 45 Schofield brass rack in a Uberti 45 Colt rifle Model 1873.
Please tell me it willI
I do appreciate your response

Sorry, it will not.  But, the rifle can be altered to accommodate .45 "specials."

The round in the elevator in a '73 IS the cartridge stop for the next round.  So, a round that is short will allow the next round to enter the elevator -- partially.  When this happens, the elevator is stuck by that second round which is bridging the magazine and elevator.

The elevator has to be altered by adding a stop that holds the round forward, against the magazine.

Can be done.  Has been done.  Works great.

Thanks for the reply . I heard that.
Is the 'fix' one that can be done by oneself 9 limited gunsmithinf ) or needs a reliable gunsmith?

There are several variables that will determine whether your Schofield ammo will cycle (not rack!) in a 73.  Read this, take two Buds and call back in the morning.

I have not shot schofield rounds in my .45LC '73, but I have loaded Black Hills dummies in it and they cycled just fine.  I also loaded them in a Henry once and they cycled fine.  Of course, YMMV, but I think as long as you don't use too short of a bullet you may be good to go.

thanks  everyone for the replies and info. I think as well that it all has to do with the OAL and finding the right mix.
Cheers

I've got a '66 in .45 that will cycle Schofields, SOMETIMES. Depends on the design of the bullet will give you a long enough overall length. The front of the elevator on mine is beveled some, so that it can push the next round back into the mag tube. I tried bullets from the Lee 255 grain RNFP mould, the nose is too short on those.

If you use a long enough bullets the Schofields will cycle. Or you can do like I did and have the Opentops reamed out to 45 Colt.
