Does anybody just order leather for cartridge loops already cut out?
If not what weight would I need from Wicket and Craig?

Ten Wolves Fiveshooter

3/4 or 4/5 ounce, I use the 4/5 the most and it tends to be closer to 4 ounce, I like it best, and have no tear outs from the stitches when using this weight leather, and make sure it's veg-tan.

There's iron in Ten Wolves' words. I also like the 3/4 or 4/5. Once you have it, you'll find other uses for it. I like it for lining a holster, too. It's also great for the pouch on Wild Bunch mag holders. I can't imagine not having a side on hand.

I have them split a side to 4 oz (it's free to split) and yes not only for loops but also good for money belts, pouches, etc.

You can also order a 3/4 oz shoulder from RJF Leather which is a bit cheaper due to the smaller size - excellent old time pit tanned leather http://rjfleather.com/content/index.php

I do like Chuck and order a side and have it split to 4oz. I cut a couple money belts across the back and then strips for cartridge loops. Any belly leather that is good enough will sometimes do linings or other thin leather needs like pouches.

When I order a regular side I will try usually get a couple belts and sometimes three out along the back before using the rest for holsters and sheaths.

When I have one split I get an A grade and ask for them to check it well because I don't want any bad places since I'm cutting straps out of it.

I prefer sides for the bullet loop strips because I do a lot of woven loops and you need a long piece for 45 cartridge loops. I takes about 6 ft for 30 45 caliber loops done that way.

I go along with what TW said. I have plenty of 4-5 oz because I line with it. KT
Cheer up things could be worse, sure enough I cheered up and they got worse.

Cliff -
I generally prefer the longer pieces too, but splicing works just as well and is PC  ;) - splice in the center and work towards both ends.....and yep about 2.5" per ctg for 45 caliber in 4 oz......

I use 4/5 and just cut long strips with my strap cutter. Not a big deal. If you are just going to do one belt and don't need much I could send you a long strip, Duke.

If you go to the FAQ thread of the forum there is a good post on loop making by Nolan Sackett (Jim Simmons)...he also suggests 3/4 oz or 4/5 oz for loops.  I use 4/5 and sometime will jump to 5/6 for double shotgun loops....the 5/6 will hold it's shape better with the double loops

FYI - Nolan Sackett is me Chuck Burrows not Jim Simmons.......actual originals used mostly 3/4 oz not heavier - 4/5 oz and heavier is a CAS thing....
