This maybe a stupid question, But how do you make sinew thread? and can you make it long or do you have to keep starting the stitch over at the end of evey 10 or 12"?  Also do you need to use hide glue to keep it in place?
Just received my new knife I got off of ebay and would like you make a rawhide / deer skin knife sheath for it.
Any help would be great!!

No such thing as a stupid question, Coache. Here's a link to the really good thread we have on hand stitching. I don't recall if it mentions making sinew thread. I'm sure other pards here will chime in with more first-hand knowledge.

Be sure to check out our FAQ thread for that and other great information.

Here's a how-to I wrote on using real sinew:

Any other questions ask away

FWIW - Linen and hemp thread were widely used by the Indians so either type of thread would be just as PC for sewing your sheath..........

I do not know how one would find them now but there was a book out at one time called something like NAKED INTO THE WILDERNESS(?).  It covered a whole lot of the most primitive, read pre-paleface, skills of the early indians and I think there was a pretty good bit on obtaining and working with sinew??  Kinda wish I had kept the book as it was really interesting and I'll even bet that Will G has a copy!

Thank you all for your help!!!!
I will post photos after the sheath is done. ( If it turns out ok )

Bob - I've got that whole series - a good one for sure, but the sinew sewing section is basically the same as I wrote up and yes they are still available.

Coache - you are welcome and I fogot there is really no way to make the sinew into a longer thread but you can buy longer lengths (up to 24") from Eidnes Furs.
