What a great gift! Nice skull

You have what appears to be the skull of a young bull...the horns are still pretty straight (cow horns have more curve to them, sooner in life), the ridges around the eye sockets aren't well developed yet and the septum is really open.....

You can see the differences in the skull of one of our old breeder bulls  from out at the refuge where I work...

He now graces my living room wall...

I kinda like to leave them as they are, but I've seen some really nice painted ones as well...

Wow,great info,i had no idea you could tell a difference,thanks..Is there any way to tighten them up?Soak it in water?I've done deer skulls that way,but don't want to mess this one up.The horns are 28" apart and he is about 18"long,don't want to do much with it,i have some buff hair on,might just wrap it around the area where the horn meets the skull and maybe a beaded strip down the center..That is a very nice one you have there.Do you get them often?

Thinkin about polishing the horns but probably not,i have an old bull skull i got from a ranch out in the country about 7 years ago i did the horns on...Big ole bull! :)

We get a few every year as natural mortality takes it's toll on our herd.  Most (cows, young bulls,)are sold at our auction in October to raise money for the refuge. A big bull skull gets a price tag put on them and are sold in our shop - with a life span of 20 years or better, you might wait quite awhile for a good one... :)

Before I hang them on the wall, I normally set the teeth and any loose bones with Elmer's wood glue...

The only time I polish the horns is when I'm using them for a project like a powder horn...but they do shine up nicely..for display I  like to leave them like I find them

Darn buff horns are more like hair than cow is.Think i will just take a tooth brush with some black shoe polish and darkin them a bit, ain't gonn polish them, just a little bit of polish too. Thanks for the education :)

No problem....Love talking about the critters

You can really see the fibrous nature of the horns when they splinter a horn in a fight....

Nice Buflur skull and horns.    :)

We've got two buffalo robes in the guest rooms at the Ranch House at White Horse Ranch.  No wonder thos indians could spend winters in those tee pees.  Them buffalo robes are WARM  :)
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

Always wanted to get a couple of buff horns to make powder horns out of. I got one years ago but it was very small and really a waste of time working on.
The first step of becoming a good shooter is knowing which end the bullet comes out of and being on the other end.
