I was making a western gunbelt for my wife and tried to stain it with the walnut dye that I made but it came out mostly light brown and some spots that were almost black. So i had a bottle of Febrings Cherry stain that i bout about 15 years a go and never used and took some wool and rubbed it in to cover up the dark spots. After several coats the belt is Ok but the stain is not evenly dark everywhere. I guess I will put a finish on it but i am not sure what the best thing to coat it with. She wants it to be glossy.
God is fluxing me which is good but it is not fun.

mrappe  You can use Resolene to get a glossy finish and it will also waterproof it to a good extent but it can become streaky if not put on right and it does give the leather a plastic look if put on to thick.
A man, a horse, and a dog never get weary of each other's company.

mrappe, did you do this very recently (today or yesterday?)

Sometimes you gotta wait a few days and it will be fine.

Adding some neatsfoot oil would help as well... it tends to help the dye spread out.

I get a nice gloss with Leather Balm with atom wax,......coat it,..let dry,...then buff a bit to get a nice gloss!
