Hi , in Packing Iron a lot of holsters are made from "saddle skirting", i was wondering what the properties are compared with veg tan tooling leather? ie; firmness, dying etc.

I need some cartridge belt leather and as Tandy UK has a sale on i was wondering if it is ok to use?

I am making Wills Ringo rig and 10 oz is required.

It states that it is 10-12 oz in the "butt???" dropping of to as little as 8oz.

would i get a consistant run for a cartridge belt from this hide?

Tandy also has a sale on this item

would it be much different if i made the Ringo from this as it is only 8-9 0z?
Thanks
Django

Django, most of the saddle skirting I've seen at Tandy is heavier than 10-12 oz, it's more like 13-15oz or more, but less at the belly. The leather is quite soft down there so most people don't recommend cutting beltsd from belly leather anyway.

I've used the import saddle skirting before,...but never again.

The fleashy side is horrible......at least mine was. It's like a layered pressed-in mat if fiber,...yick.....it's terrible to work with. The smoothe side was OK,.....but still and all,..if I'm taking the time to make a rig,.....I ain't using cheap stuff.

If its for practice work,..or a utility piece for myself,...maybe,......but otherwise,....i wouldn't sell it to anyone.

Just my opinion,..but I had bad luck with the stuff.

maybe the non-imported skirting is better,..i dunno.
