Yer lucky it is just ruins, exposure to the winds has most likely got rid of most of the smell by now. :P ;D

We got a paper mill in the vicinity, when the wind blows from the wrong side (Southeast) we got smell enough. We don't need any other smells. >:(

Out west of here they have places that turn alfalfa into those pellets that folks feed animals.  It has a smell similar to some of the Rock and Roll concerts I've been to in the 1970's. ::)

Used to have critterrs on the farm that turned alfalfa into pellets, too.  Didn't have to oil 'em, the alfalfa was enough fuel for 'em, and eventually they'd supply their own replacements.
