Stevens 311 help
« on: August 29, 2012, 10:40:06 PM »
I just bought a Stevens 311 made in 1955 code 7G in a circle. I would like to know if it's normal to have some yellow solder residue under the barrels, here two pics of the area.

That's not solder, that area was brazed. Judging by the shape of it, and this is just a guess, it looks like it developed a crack in the spacer between the barrels and was brazed back whole again. It doesn't look new, so it probably was a successful repair. I’d not worry too much about it if you are going to use it for shooting, but if you are keeping it as a collector, it will depreciate the value some. Just keep an eye on it. I would think that it is o.k. to shoot.

If you are uncertain as to how safe it is, I would try calling this guy and asking if he has a replacement barrel:

 http://www.gunsnparts.com/index.html

He strips guns from police turn-ins and confiscations before they destroy the receiver.

He has quite an inventory of gun parts. His location is only a few miles form the original Stevens and also Savage factories so there were plenty of them around to part out in the area.

Thanks guys! Bugscuffle I don't know if you're right about the repair but both barrels has some waviness (undulation) just in chamber area, and about 6-7 inches down from the breech but the bores look OK, this undulation are visible only if you aiming the gun.

From your description, it looks like bulge(s) in the barrel, possibly from shooting syteel shot in that gun. If the bulges were enough to ause that crack, I wouldn't shoot it until it was inspectd by a good gunsmith. To be completely safe, I'd take rickk's advice and rebarrel it.

If you look at the pic below most of the "bulges" are right on the chamber area, does the chamber can be affected by shooting steel shot?

The bores and chambers are ok no waviness or bulges.
