With you folks guiding me, I made a batch of vinegaroon starting back on 3-28, and got to use it for the first time last night. I'm making a simple holster for the Bond Century 2000 derringer my loving wife presented to me recently, and the deep black-gray that resulted from soaking and an overnight dry is thorough and attractive. This morning I'm neutralizing and will emboss (hope this sequence of steps works out). I had to do some trimming and was pleased that the reagent soaked completely through the leather (three thicknesses) and did not require re-coloring to even things out. I love deep black holsters and don't see myself using other type agents to color my projects in the near future. thanks again, Don.

Tallbald, glad the vinegaroon worked out for you.  I have a feeling that it will not be long and you will be experimenting with other colors ... like walnut stain  ;D

Don, that is great news pard, I think most that try the natural dyes tend to stay with them, they are just better, and much more user friendly IMHO, not to mention you won't have the common rub off problems you get with the other dyes, the colors are through and through, rich and deep, what more could any one want. Be sure to post a picture when you done,

Thanks for the encouragement. Yes, walnut stain is in my future-- here in southern KY walnut trees  are common, and the husks/nuts are usually free for the asking because younger folks no longer seem interested in gathering them for sale as did I back in the 70's. I'd be pleased to show a picture of my holster I think but it's a pocket holster. Is that OK? I would guess back in the day gents were known to carry a derringer in a pocket holster so they didn't shoot themselves in the thigh. thanks, Don

TallBald,

I thought I had already shown this pic, but this might be a way to set up that holster
