I have a friend that needs a belt and holster for a 5 1/2" barreled Cap and ball, so I decided to make one for him.

Pattern: Will Gromely Cheyenne holster pattern ...  After shortening the holster for a 51/2 barrel I did not like where the second loop was positioned so decided to just use the single loop.

Dye:  I mixed 2 oz of Fiebing's saddle tan dye with 8 oz of extra virgin olive oil. First step toward getting brave enough to mix my own dye.    I actually was planning to use two or three coats but after seeing the results with a single application, I stopped with one coat.  I did apply a second light coat of Evoo to the leather.

Here is the finished product and I am happy with it ... I hope my friend is also.  Sorry for the poor quality, my camera was not working so had to take snips from a video.

Wolf Tracker

Two Walks  that turned out very nice. It's nice to see that you took a pattern and personalized it to make it your own.

Neat holster and belt!
I think that would be really cool to build that as a Cheyenne 2 loop, antique it, then cut the bottom portion off to what you have now. Make it kind of a nice bunkhouse repair look.
Good job!

Wolf Tracker and Dalton Masterson, thank you for the kind words.  It use to get my Dad when I would buy a new gun.  First thing I would do is bring it home, break it down and refinish the stock and then start making other alterations ... Never could just leave things the way they are, so altering Wills pattern just seems to be in my blood.

2W, that solution is a very good one. It makes for a nicely balanced looking holster. Your friend should be very happy with that. Great idea.

Thanks Johnny, my friend had no idea that I was going to make it for him.

I had loaned him a holster and belt, so yesterday I told him I needed him to bring them back.  I walked into the room and handed the new belt and holster too him and he looked like he was going to let the tears flow.  Stuttered a couple times and finally got out the word Thanks.

Yes Kate this is a rewarding hobby.
