Just found and ordered a Uberti/Cimarron 1885 Low Wall in 38-40 . Should arrive in about two weeks from Texas .
I purchased it over the 44-40 because of the great number of bullets available since it is really a .40 cal or 10mm .401
diameter . I will be loading BP as well as smokeless . Anyone own this rifle ? comments or advice . Also how about the Lyman #2 tang sight ? could I just use that sight with the standard front sight ? Should I replace the front sight with a globe type sight ? Thanks

Here's a thought...

Why don't you wait until you get it and then shoot it?

Run 'at least' 100 rounds of factory smokeless through the weapon, and that'll let you know how it shoots, and if these sights work well with 'your' eyes.

Anything after that break-in period can be considered, because you'll then have a basis of personal experience with that particular weapon.

Good Luck!

I guess I should of been more specific with my question . With the Lyman type aperture sights can you use the factory front sight ? will it work .Not just for my eyes but as a general rule ? I know I'am not sticking with the factory Buckhorn sight , I have tried those in the past and with my 50 Yr. old eyes they do not work for me . Thanks for the replies .

Blackpowder Burn

The Lyman sight will work with the front sight.  I personally prefer the Marbles tang sight to the Lyman, as it is both windage and elevation adjustable.  Try the folks at Buffalo Arms for the sight.  They are some of the nicest people you'll ever deal with and they'll take all the time you want to answer your questions.

That is where I purchased the Low Wall from Buffalo Arms . Ordered it from Cimarron down in Texas . They are great people . They were the only ones who came through with finding what I wanted and at a big $ savings also . I did not know that the Lyman #2 sight was not windage adjustable ?

It is if you have a hammer.  8)

If the stock front sight is a plain blade like Uberti uses on most of its other rifles, you might want to replace it with a sight that has a bead.  You don't need really super expensive sights (like and MVA) since the .38-40 is not a long range gun.  The Marbles with windage and a good front sight will be plenty good for the distances you will be shooting.
